Free Music Notes for Hit ListFree Music Review: The Hit List Hit: 4 Stars
Not long ago I was perusing Youtube when I came across Joan Jett's version of the AC/DC classic "Dirty Deeds". I'm really wary of other artists covering songs by AC/DC or any band as popular as AC/DC but Joan really pulls it off in my honest opinion. After discovering Joan's version of "Dirty Deeds", I found her version of the CCR classic "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?". I too immediately fell in love with the song. That was the clincher that I needed to buy The Hit List. I quickly got a copy of Joan Jett's cover album The Hit List. For the most part, I really enjoyed The Hit List. I personally thought Joan and the Blackhearts did a great job on the songs. The only song I do not care for is "Up from the Skies". Even Joan could not make that song sound good. I just did not care for the melodies but otherwise I loved the other songs.
Free Music Review: Worthy Title Hit: 4 Stars
I don't usually like or buy 'greatest hits' type albums, but the collection in "The Hit List" is different. These are not the big commercial success songs, but a really fine collection of more obscure and great cover songs. This album is a must for Joan Jett fans.
Free Music Review: BASIC COVERAGE Hit: 3 Stars
Since nearly all of leather-clad pre-Riot GRRRL Joan Jett's biggest hits were cover versions anyway (even I LOVE ROCK & ROLL was originally an English hit for the Arrows), an entire disc of rock classic remakes makes perfect sense. Everyone from the Ramones to Rush have released all-cover platters of their fave influences, but Jett's time-ripping trip is one of the earliest and best. The smartly titled HIT LIST showcases the Blackheart Babe's crunching, glam-punctuated takes on AC/DC's DIRTY DEEDS DONE DIRT CHEAP, ZZ Top's sex-pot anthem TUSH, and even PRETTY VACANT, from punk darlings the Sex Pistols. For contrast, the Kinks' doleful tribute to Hollywood's hey-day, CELLULOID HEROES, and Nazareth's ballad biggie LOVE HURTS also get the nod. Like Brownsville Station before her, this Suzi Quatro protege can give the Gary Glitter treatment to nearly any oldie, from TIME HAS COME TODAY to ROADRUNNER, and make it come across as her own idea. These SOUND like Joan Jett's greatest hits, and you'll have so much fun listening, you won't even care that none of them really are.
RATING: THREE BLACK HEARTS
Free Music Review: Interesting Hit: 2 Stars
If Joan Jett knew how bad these sounded, she would have bought the rights to this recording and burned them. Its not even close, and she hardly tries. Better to have left this one as a "shower" session. Love her other works, am a fan.
