Free Music Review: Great album whether it's country or not

Despite being born and raised in Kentucky, this is near as Joan ever got to a recording a country album, though I doubt that it will appeal to those country music fans who only like that kind of music. I am a huge country music fan, but I enjoy many other styles of music too and I knew the nature of the music here long before I bought it, notwithstanding that it was recorded in Nashville. Had Joan wanted to pursue a country music career, she would have stayed in Kentucky or moved to the adjacent state of Tennessee to the south, but she chose to pursue her musical ambitions from a base in New York. The songs here mix covers with Joan's own songs and the balance works well.
The solidly country tracks are Please don't tell me how the story ends (one of Kris Kristofferson's classic songs that plenty of country singers have covered), Till I get it right (one of Tammy Wynette`s classic songs) and Time won`t tell (co-written by two great country songwriters) . With these tracks, Joan demonstrates that she can record authentic country music when she wants to, but they are not typical of the album as a whole. Elsewhere, some tracks have more a country fell than others, but given the direction in which country music itself has moved in recent years, most of the tracks here would fit right in there. But what really matters is not how the music here is classified, but the quality - and this album oozes quality. The other three covers are Brokedown palace (a Grateful Dead song), What you are (a Patty Griffin song) and When the blue hour comes (a Rodney Crowell song, but Joan's own songs really set the seal on this album. Best among them may be the title track and Who divided, but the others (Holy waters, Shake that devil, Dead roses, After Jane) are not far behind.
On first listen, Joan's impressive renditions of songs I was already familiar with stood out, but upon further listens, I quickly realized what a fantastic album this is all the way through. I wonder what might have been had Joan tried for a country music career from the beginning. Then again, country music imposes its own constraints and that clearly wouldn't have suited Joan, who appears destined to be of those hugely talented artists who records what she feels like and is therefore a nightmare for marketing men.
I hope that Joan records another album in similar vein at some point. Meanwhile, I'm very pleased to have this album in my collection. I will file it with my other country albums, because although it doesn't sound country all the way through, I think it has enough of a country feel to justify its place there.
