Free Music Review: This is Sutherland at her very best!

I bought this Puritani along with her Sonnambula of the same year with Resigno. What a contrast! I don't mean her technique, which remains in unequaled in both performances. But in this performance under the great Serafin her expression and interpretation reached heights which she would never again achieve with her permanent conductor and husband Richard Bonynge. Here her virtuosity is completely at the service of her art, and indeed I'm sure Bellini would believe that she had achieved his goal of making his audiences weep, and die of weeping. She sounds absolutely hearbreaking in Oh vieni al tempio, and you weep with her in the famous qui la voce. In the cabalettas, she tastefully refrained from over decorating her melodies, witout at all diminishing her stature as the supreme Bel Canto artist of her time. This is a recording I will return to frequently to savour its many beauties, and is is far ahead of her 2 studio recordings. I've always thought that Dame Joan deserved a better conductor than her husband, and here is ample proof! And furthermore, I hear little evidence of her infamous diction in this recording!
