While its true that Miss Newsom's voice is unusual, she manupilates this as her greatest instrument--at times throaty and melancholy, at others, whimsical and child-like. I LOVE HER VOICE and HER HARPS TENDER MOMENTS and Massa Van Dyke Parks has certainly added his true sense. Sounds a wee bit like Marc Bolan - BELTANE - A Musical Fantasy Catherine Lambert and Company's Tra La La which is classically unavailable at this time. Ys is VERY available. and very niceys. LOVE HER VOICE and clasp at Cassiopeia again. I didn't like this album when I first heard it. It may sound odd, but I was actually bothered by how refined her voice had become. Then one day, I finally decided to stop being such an elitist and give it a listen. As it turned out, I had been missing out on five of the best songs ever written. Each song is its own epic tale laid over some truly amazing Kora rhythms, quiet melodies, and beautifully written orchestral accompaniment. Joanna is amazing. You can tell that she is really coming into her voice. Each song is lyrically amazing. She is a brilliant story teller. I can listen to this album over and over again, each time discovering a new story line I overlooked before. I have seen her perform this album live twice and it was so moving. My favorite song "only skin" just because it seems to combine so many elements from all the other songs and brings them into one beautiful climax. Highly recommended.Free Music Review: Extraordinary!

This is simply one of the most extraordinary recorded works I have ever encountered. I have found that the more time I give it, the more it rewards each listen. I have a similar experience listening to Joanna that I have when I listen to Kate Bush or Judee Sill - it's as though I am catching glimpses of a beautiful (and sometimes scary) private world. Highly personal and yet inscrutable. Utterly unique. And when I start listening to her, it is very hard to listen to anyone else.
