Free Music Review: Joe Blues Bonamas'ter' Hit: 5 StarsJoe Bonamassa is all over his guitar, and with both an exceptional bassist and drummer, has recorded a true gift for blues lovers. I have been listening to the blues/rock for quite a few 24's and Mr. Bonamassa touched my soul. He is gentle and strong - and absolutely kicks ass!
Free Music Review: Great live performance Hit: 5 StarsI recently discovered JB based on an Amazon "recommendation". I think a "live" album is one of the best ways to evaluate an artist's true talents and Joe shines in this one. His guitar playing places him among the legendary blues rockers IMHO and his voice is perfect for the genre. All of the cuts are juicy but the title track as well as "Nickels" are especially well done. I never expected a Tull cover to Rock like "New Day" but this one does.
Free Music Review: Guitar slinger extraordinaire Hit: 5 StarsI have been following Joe's career since his early band "Bloodline" and this young man is the real deal. A gravely, authentic blues voice to go along with his stunning guitar and songwriting skills, Joe and his band are tight, talented and quite frankly, I cannot understand why he is still opening up for other acts. Looking forward to many years of music from you, Joe.
This cd was originally only available at his shows and you are fortunate you can get your hands on this one. One of the best live releases ever, this album smokes. Joe's version of Jethro Tull's "A New Day Yesterday" is worthy of the cost by itself.

Free Music Review: A little taste, please Hit: 4 StarsI bought the studio version long ago, and enjoyed, though did not love, it. In my review, I suspected the songs would work better live. And they do. But, having seen Joe live recently, I think he suffers from a little too much self-assurance. (Otherwise known as arrogance.)
Most of these songs go on too long. (Most did when I saw him live as well.) Joe seems to be of the school that if three repitions of a riff is good, then four is dynamite. Well, no matter how good the riff is, four times is a lot. Sometimes a little too much, sometimes way too much. There were many times, both here and at the show, when I wanted to say "OK, we get it, now move along...."
So, better than the studio? Yes, indeed, both A New Day Yesterday and Miss You, Hate You, the standouts from the studio version, shine here. But in many other places, the guitar, while impressive, just lasts a hair too long.
Sometimes less is more. And sometimes more is too much. Sorry, Mae, you can have too much of a good thing.
