Free Music Review: This one gets better each time you listen to it
Hit: 5 Stars

"Blue and Evil" hit me right away as one gem of this album, while "Athens to Athens" struck me as an energetic breath of fresh air. Joe's vocals are impressive on this album. "Bird on a Wire" is a beautiful piece, just like his live performance of the same song. This album is well rounded, with a variety of styles and moods. Once you give it a full listen, or even a small break between sessions, you might see the immense talent Joe has as both a guitarist and artist, in general.

Every Bonamassa fan, especially those who have seen him live, looks forward to something unique from his guitar arsenal. What you get here is clean-sharp, bluesy guitar on "Look over Yonders Wall", British-blues-Beck, gritty guitar on "Spanish Boots", and some deep, bluesy riffs on "I know a Place." "Quarryman's Lament" is a new favorite of mine, blending a Mediterranean feel with Joe's personal style. And if you like that Zeppelin-esque riff in "Blue and Evil", like I do, listen to Joe's live version of "Just Got Paid/Dazed and Confused" from the album "Shepherd's Bush," which is hard to find. It and the album are ridiculous. Anyone who can play Jimmy Paige better than Paige, including the slapping of the strings and incredible wah wah (sorry-no violin bow here), gets my props. Did I mention it's live and that he nails it every time? Now if we can get Joe to cover "How Many More Times," then I would bow down to the master. The only thing I wish Joe would do on a future album is bring back a bit of the Strat that originally made "A New Day Yesterday" a favorite album and concert video of mine. Oh, and more twelve-string work at some point, would be a huge bonus, too.

Great album Joe. It was great meeting you in Southern California a few years back. You were very approachable and eager to talk music. Keep it humble and keep it rockin'. What makes you great is your ability to transcend the traditional blues, incorporate your own style (Gibson, acoustic-classic, slide, etc.) while mastering others, and keep it fresh and interesting.

Black Rock Poster

Just awarded the Breakthrough Artist of the Year Award at the UK's prestigious Classic Rock Roll of Honour Awards, blues-rock guitar hero and singer-songwriter Joe Bonamassa is set to release his tenth full-length solo album, BLACK ROCK, on March 23, 2010. This album was recorded at, and named for, Black Rock Studios in Santorini, Greece. With this album, we wanted to explore a world feeling, and this was the inspiration behind going to record in Greece and using some of the best Greek musicians to add a little flavor to a couple of the tracks. But it s by no means a world album. We wanted Joe s usual youthful and energetic tones to play alongside the worldly vibes of the Greek bouzouki and clarino, said producer Kevin Shirley. Bonamassa says, It was the kind of record Kevin and I wanted to make. We needed to rock again a bit like on my first album. I wrote the whole thing there. Also Joe signed up Blues legend B.B. King for a duet on his new album. The song they perform together is a rendition of the Willie Nelson-penned song, Night Life, which appeared on King s 1967 album BLUES IS KING. Shirley says about the experience, This is a rollicking Stonesy-vibe version of the Willie Nelson song on which B.B. King duets with Joe, both vocally and on his famous Lucille guitar. What a joy and an honor to work with the legend who is possibly the pivot point and unifying musician between Blues and Rock. Other tracks appearing on BLACK ROCK include Jeff Beck s Spanish Boots, Leonard Cohen s poetic Bird On A Wire, Otis Rush's Three Times A Fool, Bobby Parker's Steal Your Heart Away, Blind Boy Fuller's Baby, You Gotta Change Your Mind, John Hiatt's I Know A Place, and James Clark's Look Over Yonders Wall, as well as the originals When The Fire Hits The Sea, Quarryman's Lament, Wandering Earth, Athens To Athens and Blue and Evil.
