Free Music Notes for Live from Nowhere in ParticularFree Music Review: A couple of minor letdowns, but great album! Hit: 5 Stars
This album features some of Joe B.'s best guitar work and especially his best vocals. We all know how tremendous of a guitar talent he is, but he seems to be getting better and better vocally (he was always very good, of course). "Asking Around For You" is especially fantastic. And a great solo from the piano player as well. His guitar playing is astounding in "Walk In My Shadows" and "So Many Roads". In addition to some other reviewers, I also would welcome more blues material in this album, but I still enjoyed some of the rock material, especially the "Just Got Paid"-"Dazed and Confused" medley--great stuff!
A couple of letdowns, though, albeit minor ones. First, "If Heartaches Were Nickels" starts off as a heartfelt, acoustic blues with Joe just kicking butt vocally. Then, after only one verse and chorus, the song drifts into a instrumental motif from the Beatles' "She's So Heavy", and then just fizzles out. What a waste--it would have been much more effective to play the whole song ("If Heartaches...")
Also, some of the material on this album was already released--in a live format, no less--on Shepherd's Bush, just a few months ago. So there's somewhat of a redundancy there. Shepherd's Bush was great, so it would have been better to use some other songs on this album instead, like maybe "Burning Hell", as another reviewer mentioned. And "Mountain Time" is a pretty good song, but it is getting a bit tiresome--it was on Shepherd's Bush as well as the Rockpalast DVD. There are so many better songs to run into the ground! :)
Overall though, a great effort, and I'm glad to see that Joe's popularity seems to be growing all the time. It's about time talent took over the music charts again!!
Free Music Review: Nowhere on Earth Hit: 5 Stars
Nowhere on Earth are you going to find a better live album produced this Centry. Joe has been tearing up stages for nearly 20 years. This set is indicative of where he is at at this particular time in his career. Even though this recording what pieced together from a few different shows recorded in late 2007 it plays seemlessly.
Having seen Joe numerous times I at first thought the crowd seemed a little distant. Joe's crowds can get pretty vocal at times. With the crowd noise kept to a minimum it doesn't seem to interfere with the moments captured here.
The production of this live opus was handled by none other than Kevin Shirley most noted for recent work remastering the Led Zepelin DVD How The West Was Won. Kevin "Caveman" Shirley has been working with Joe for the last 2 studio albums and this live album is really the crowning achievment of their relationship thus far. It captures Joe's intensity and the musician ship of Joe's current band. Bogie Bowles, drums, Carmine Rojas, bass, Rick Melick, keyboards.
One thing in particular nowhere on Earth can you find a 2 CD package this good priced like this.
Free Music Review: Keeper of the British blues god flame (even if he isn't British) Hit: 5 Stars
My favorite CD of 2009 so far. Don't let the negative reviews scare you away if you like good guitar playing (and you don't need to put labels on it to enjoy it). Sure, from a purist standpoint, there's stuff on these disks that is loud raunchy, Marshall-driven rock. But, for me, that actually makes it sweeter. And you can say the same for most disks by Clapton or Hendrix...maybe even Buddy Guy. If grew up loving Cream, Free, early Jethro Tull, and Jeff Beck, Joe is the guy for you. He brings it all forward and adds some dynamite technique. Joe has said that with this disk he was trying to make a live disk worthy of being listened to as we listen to "The Allman Brothers Live at The Fillmore East," "Wheels of Fire," or "Band of Gypsys." It may not surpass them, but I can't think of another CD release in the last 20 years that I would consider even close to being in the same ballpark as those great disks except this one. And I actually thing the second disk is a pinnacle in his playing. "Sloe Gin," "Django'" and "High Water Everywhere" are just sweet, creative picking. You really won't regret laying out the coin for this one.
Free Music Review: Good musicians borrow, but the great ones STEAL! Hit: 5 Stars
OK, first the disclaimers. 1) Joe is my favorite contemporary guitarist. 2) I'm partial to electric blues. 3) I possess a prominent bias for live performances - I feed off of the energy they contain.
That said, this is a great CD! with some of Joe's typical (i.e., Great!) performances captured to enjoy conveniently and often. I absolutely love his earlier live CD (and DVD, A New Day Yesterday Live) with its rock-ier vibe, but this one's got a pleasing *range* represented. Lots more acoustic work, including "If Heartaches Were Nickels" (one of his most successful 'thefts'). Like a previous reviewer, I can't get enough plays of "Mountain Time" - I love that glassy tone and the yearning feel of this one (check out the Live at Rockpalast DVD if you wanna see him play this on the "coppertop"). But there are so many gems on this double CD, including great cover jams of Yes, ZZ, and Zep. It's like sex - it's all good, just some's better. ;)
My advice? Stop reading about it and buy this now! And go see Joe in person every chance you get!
Free Music Review: Next Best Thing to Seeing Him Live Hit: 5 Stars
This CD is absolutely wonderful. I enjoyed every minute of it. It is a "cherry picking" of the best live performances of all the songs he has been doing live regularly, with his "new" band, over the past couple years. As a veteran of numerous Bonamassa shows since early 2004, including one just last week, with first his old "power trio" harder style and what he's been doing since early 2006, I can say that (while nothing beats being there) this is a lot like being in the front row on a night when everything goes right, but without any drunks talking through and ruining any of the songs! This has all the "taking off his gloves and ripping on the guitar" you look forward to seeing Joe live. Of his last three albums (and I own and like them all), this is his best. And next to taking them to a show, this is the best way to introduce newbies to today's Joe Bonamassa. You'll never spend $14 better -- get this CD!
