Free Music Review: Joe Jackson - Decent, But He Has Done Better

This is a two disc set that contains what was Joe's new studio album in 2003 as well as a bonus 6 track live disc. For "Volume 4" Jackson puts his original band back together. These are the same guys who recorded with Jackson on his first three albums thus the "Volume 4" title. The sound of the album definitely harkens back to Joe's early punk/ jazz / new wave roots and most of this stuff could have been right at home circa 1979. The sound is stripped down with Joe's piano not being as up front nearly as much as much of his more recent material. Overall I think that the album is decent, but he has done better. On most of Joe's albums that are at least a few songs that really stand out as being great, but I don't find that here. The songwriting is all good, but again, not quite up to what I know Jackson is capable of. Of the better tunes highlights include "Take It Like A Man", "Love At First Light", and "Dirty Martini". "Thugz r Us" takes an amusing stab at hip hop culture, not unlike Ben Folds "Rockin' The Suburbs", but I prefer Folds song to this one. All in all this is a decent album for Jackson fans, but for a beginner I would start with some of his earlier material. The disc also comes with a 6 track live album again recorded with the original band. It is a nice little bonus, but again does not stand up to some of Jackson's earlier live discs.

What could have been a colossal self-indulgence proves a startlingly vital album. Volume IV is faithful to the ethos of early Joe Jackson hits like "One More Time" and "Is She Really Going Out with Him?" Built around clattering drums, jarring guitar, hyperactive keyboards, snarling vocals, and lyrics riddled with puns and double-entendres, it harkens back to the early 1970s and late `80s, when Jackson peddled a wordy and venomous strain of new wave pop. But Jackson is too clever to get suckered by nostalgia. Here he wryly contemplates his middle-aged present from inside his old clothes. The best of the resulting songs, "Blue Flame" and "Still Alive," are as good as anything he's done. Volume IV is where Jackson completes his circuit, reuniting with his original band and reacquainting himself with his original live-to-tape recording methods. --Andrew MuellerLimited edition bonus cd includes live versions of "One More Time", "Is She Really Going Out With Him", "On Your Radio", "Got the Time", "It's Different for Girls", "I'm the Man" from the 2002 UK tour.
