Free Music Notes for Summer in the City: Live in New YorkFree Music Review: "SUMMER IN THE CITY" Hit: 5 StarsThis is an absolutely great live performance. I generally shy away from concert CD's, because most artist tend to disappoint when recorded outside the studio. However, Joe Jackson is almost magical when performing live. I was fortunate enough to see his concert at the 9:30 club in Washington DC. recently and I can say that it was probably the most enjoyable concert that I have attended. "Summer In The City" is simply a pleasure to hear. I especially enjoy the second half of the CD starting with Joe's version of "Eleanor Rigby", "Be My Number Two", and "Home Town". I have been listening to Joe Jackson recordings for over 25 years and this CD is one of his best!!!
Free Music Review: well played and well arranged collection of Jackson oddities Hit: 4 StarsI enjoy this cd and listen to it periodically, though I am not that excited by it to tell you the truth. It is a pretty good cd and if you happen to find it you will like it because the songs are well played and all the musicians are very good in the stripped down trio format. i am not a big fan of Jackson personally though; I was fairly put off when he said "normally I hate bass solos..." on this cd. He seems a little hypocritical, sort of like Elvis Costello. If that kind of style sounds good to you though, definitely get this if you find it. His best stuff is on the 2 cd best of collection, so this isn't a definitive release obviously. There is no guitar, so only expect piano music that is very well arranged.
Free Music Review: The best Joe Jackson album I own Hit: 5 StarsThis is an outstanding album, one of the best I own. Personally I'm a big fan of piano based singer/songwriters, and after listening to this live album of Jackson with the sparse arrangement of a piano, bass and drums, it's clear he's one of the best there is. His playing is a mixture of rock and jazz, without any pedal or fudged notes. There's some fantastic covers as well. He swings from a Duke Ellington cover ('Mood Indigo') to a sparse Beatles cover ('Eleanor Rigby') then onto a brilliant Steely Dan number ('King of the World').
For those who are piano players this is also a great album to listen to. It may not be clear to people who don't play piano, but listening to Jackson with a trained ear... the guy can really play. In contrast to the sparse shuffles of Randy Newman and the pedal-heavy slamming of Ben Folds and Elton John, Jackson rises to the top. And he's got a great voice too.
This is a great replay album too, so buy it and wear it out.
Free Music Review: Strange how things work out... Hit: 5 StarsI actually heard 'Summer in the City' the song on the Simpsons one time....I remembered to search for it and listened to it. I couldn't get enough of it, and bought the whole album.
And hey, this disc is well worth it. Joe Jackson's far enough out of the mainstream to be original yet not too far as to lack a large fanbase. The man can perform some good songs.
Free Music Review: Jab the Past Hit: 5 StarsJoe Jackson's "Summer in the City" is a great live set. It crackles with energy and verve with Jackson jabbing the past with 5 well-chosen covers from other songwriters. John Sebastian's "Summer in the City" is a welcome warm breeze, although too brief at under 2 minutes, with Jackson's pounding piano. His "Obvious Song" has punch as Joe's piano comes in just slightly behind the beat to great effect. On "Another World" he utilizes the entire keyboard from highest to lowest notes and vocally lifts the chorus over the pulsing piano line. Graham Maby's bass throbs on the medley of Jackson's "Fools in Love" and the Yardbirds' Graham Gouldman-penned classic "For Your Love." Jackson includes his love for classic jazz with the Duke Ellington tribute "Mood Indigo." Another great medley is the combination of Jackson's "Down to London" with the Ramsey Lewis hit "In Crowd" where Joe swelters on that familiar piano line. Lennon & McCartney's "Eleanor Rigby" receives a good reading and shows what a wonderful composition it is as breathy Joe's vocal diverges from what we've come to expect from the McCartney standard. "Be My #2" has a sad feel, "There is not much to do, just smile when I feel blue." On "Home Town" the voice of experience flavors Joe's vocal delivery on this wistful, sentimental tune. "It's Different for Girls" works well in this sparse musical setting. Walter Becker & Donald Fagen's "King of the World" becomes a Joe Jackson tune with his signature vocal snarl. "You Can't Get What You Want" is probably my #1 favorite Jackson track; it's live version works well with slightly less punch than the original studio version. Gary Burke's drums thunder on the opening of "One More Time" on a great track. This live set is more than anything a piano CD; I love it! This is one of my favorite live sets. Enjoy!
