Free Music Review: Please let this be a comeback ...
Hit: 5 Stars

Finally, after over ten years of failed classical experiments and song cycles, we have a good Joe Jackson album again. The trio with Maby and Burke has lost none of its chops over the years, and, though there are no new songs, the selection of Jackson material and covers works well. I had given up on Joe but this makes me eager for the upcoming release of "Night and Day II".

Free Music Review: The cover songs make this record...
Hit: 4 Stars

All the playing is tight and engaging, but the choice of covers and their juxtaposition really works on this record. The In Crowd, Down in London, and Mood Indigo especially.

I bought this one used (sorry guys) thinking it would be a retread and a complete waste of money, but this works as a complete album.

If you're a fan, get it. New to joe?... start with Look Sharp.

Free Music Review: Brilliance by a brilliant artist
Hit: 5 Stars

Joe Jackson is one of the most under-rated artists of the last thirty years. All you need is one listen to this fantastic live set to understand why. His lyrics do not disappoint, and his music can be quite beautiful, even when it's full of rage. I came to appreciate Joe Jackson in my mid-twenties, and am the richer for it.

Joe was "hip" long before Elvis Costello, and socially aware (read: angry) well before Nirvana and the rest of the grungies. It's clear, listening to this record, that Joe Jackson is one of the most influential, though silently so, artists of the last quarter-century.

This record is a better live recording than any of his previous live releases. If that's due to advances in technology or in Joe himself is to be debated. I do know that any Joe Jackson fan should own this disc, and listen to it often. You won't be disappointed.

If you like Elvis Costello, or anyone else of his genre, pick this up, because you'll hear a musical genius at work.

Free Music Review: remember how good his last live cd was...
Hit: 5 Stars

i'm not a big fan of live albums. i much prefer to see the act in person than hear vicariously through a cd. joe jackson, however, seems to be able to put out live cd's that fill me up with as much joy as the actual concerts.

what do i love about them? the choice of songs (covers of "the in crowd", "for your love", and "eleanor rigby" as well as others) and different takes of old chestnuts. plus, he sounds great and somehow that energy that i never seem to get from other live albums comes through here.

i've found myself spinning this disc many times since it came home with me.

Free Music Review: the best JJ album in quite some time
Hit: 4 Stars

Here's a question for you... What do The Beatles, DukeEllington, Steely Dan, The Yardbirds, & The Lovin' Spoonful allhave in common? They're just some of the artists covered by Joe Jackson on his new live album. Performing in a stripped down trio setting (Jackson on piano & vocals, Graham Maby on bass & vocals, and Gary Burke on drums), Jackson takes some of his biggest tunes, plus a handful of choice covers to come up with one of the most enjoyable and consistent albums of his career. Jackson kicks things off with a good, but short, rendition of the title track, then launches into "Obvious Song." The song doesn't have the urgency of the studio version, but it's still a good performance. If nothing else, it should get people to check out the original on Laughter and Lust. Graham Maby shows off his bass playing abilities with a solo on "Another World." Maby gets a slippery groove going on "Fools in Love," later setting up JJ's seamless segue into The Yardbirds' "For Your Love." The covers continue as Jackson pays tribute to the great Duke Ellington on "Mood Indigo." Up next is another medley--this time the songs cover the years 1965 ("The In Crowd") to 1989 for "Down to London." It's amazing how well the medleys work on this album. The only dud on Summer in the City is "Home Town," from Jackson's underrated Big World album. The rest of the CD is great. This album is an excellent intro to Jackson's music, and longtime fans will love it too.
