Free Music Notes for Joe SatrianiFree Music Review: Not As Accessible to the Fairweather Fan... Hit: 5 Starsand let that type wallow in their own slime.
First of all, let me say that the last 180 seconds of "If" are more fantastic than anything Joe has released to date (with the last 70 seconds just searing the speakers on my laptop...). Luminous Flesh Giants, Cool #9, S.M.F. Home... this is the Joe CD that is closest to my heart. I find many of the songs highly addictive. This CD, EJ's Ah Via Musicom, and Vai's Alien Love Secrets are the rare instrumental albums from the mid 90's that I still listen to. I also think that this album cover is the most representative of any of his CD's with the exception of Surfing... the red backdrop... the guitar upside-down... dressed in black... I can almost see the late-great Cash doing something like that. The contents of this CD are hot, with songs that most listeners will find to be opposite from what they'd normally expect, and Joe doesn't hide anything.
Props to Nathan East (bass), Manu Katche (drums), and Andy Fairweather Low (rhythm guitar) for their killer contributions to this album. They make a tremendous difference. If this record is the outcome of a 'new' band, Joe should be forced to play with new musicians for every album.
If you can't appreciate Eric Johnson or Keb Mo, don't buy this CD. Like every other reviewer has noted, it's bluesy. BTW, I highly recommend anybody reading this to check out Jeff Beck's 'You Had it Coming', if you have any affinity for techno or strong beats. Many songs top Satch's Engines of Creation (with all due deference to Satch).
Free Music Review: Incredibly satisfying funky, bluesy music Hit: 5 StarsI bought this CD twice in the past year. The first time I listened to it, I was under major stress and my impression of the CD was strongly affected by my mood. That impression, thankfully, has been corrected by a second listening. I took the first CD back for an exchange. To me, except for Cool #9, it sounded like Joe Satriani was making an effort to sound as evil and dark as possible and I didn't care for the music.
A year later, I listened to several sample cuts on Amazon.com and realized that I should give this music a second chance. I'm very glad to have the CD again. Many of the songs are so beautiful and emotional they could make you cry. My memory of my first impression of this music now astounds me. There's different moods and tempos, superb production, and plenty to like and to let grow on you.
Music that will grow on you. Non-commercial innovative music. Music to listen to over and over. If you're into rock, blues, or jazz-fusion, you'll find something to love on this album.
AND, to my ears, this music is an impeccably clear statement of who and what Joe Satriani is. The world as experienced by him and then translated into music heard and felt by the listener. Oh yes, and it's a good value - 12 long songs and no duds.
Free Music Review: No Holes Here! Hit: 5 StarsAccording to Blues great Albert King, "If you don't dig the Blues, you got a hole in your soul!" Joe proves beyond any doubt on his self-titled release, that there are no holes here! It's apparent that he has a love and understanding of the Blues genre, and he displays his understanding well. From the opener, "Cool #9" thru the rest of the album, Satch sets you to really crave that next Bluesy lick coming from his wailing guitar! Just put on the headphones, sit back and let Satch take you on a journey thru the Blues. It's a great ride!
Free Music Review: Raw with Virtuosity Hit: 5 StarsSatch shows what he can do without a bunch of fancy equipment, Cool #9 may be the best new blues song of this decade. Killer Bee Bop leaves you in chills. This album proved to me Satch made those licks and tones with his fingers alone, not fancy equipment.
Free Music Review: creativity within creativity Hit: 5 Starswith every new album joe puts out, he always does something different. in this album he does a little more than that, not only does he do a really good blues album, but he spans many different subgenres of blues. its amazing how he can explore creativity within creativity. my favorite tunes on this one would have to be all of them, even after only the first listen, i fell in love with all the songs and that doesn't happen very often with me. a lot of people i have talked to have said that killer bee bop just doesn't fit, but i strongly disagree. it fits because its so out there that it is really in there, its kinda confusing i know, but its like a dab of blue in a painting full of reds, it just fits because it doesn't.
