Free Music Notes for Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of Rock

Free Music Review: A Fantastic Album
Hit: 5 Stars

This guy is above and beyond my favorite artist. Every album has yet to disappoint. Only one song I don't particularly like on this release: Professor Satchafunkilus. It's all right, but you really gotta be in a goofy mood for it. Otherwise the other ten tracks are great listening, especially on the road.

Free Music Review: Totally Magic
Hit: 5 Stars

This is another incredible release from Joe. The feel of his music is mostly not the same as it was 20 years ago, but it still has the magic that raises your spirit and engages you. I have zero musical ability, so the technical aspects of his playing are beyond me; what I love about his music is that there's so much there if you just pay attention. Subtle details of sounds that make it real. It's possibly easier for me to enjoy the magic because I have no musical knowledge to analyze it with - I'm free to just enjoy it. He brings life and energy to his music.

Free Music Review: Excellent CD, enjoyable from start to finish
Hit: 5 Stars

There really isn't a bad song here. I am amazed by critics of Satch who over-analyze and expect way to much instead of just listening to the music. There are some good melodies and some songs that go in different directions, some that remind you of other Satch songs and other bands. I think Joe accomplished what he set out to do on this album. *****'s

Free Music Review: Not quite cool enough for me.
Hit: 3 Stars

While I've loved Satch since I first bought Surfing with the Alien back in the day, I've noticed that the past few albums have seemed lackluster to me. My biggest gripe with Satch is something I didn't mind back when Surfing came out, that being that the only instrument in the music that gets to shine is the guitar. That's fine on a basic level, but these songs could be so much better if Satch would let the excellent musicians he plays with do something more than provide a basic rhythm for his stellar playing. This feeling really hit home after watching a video he produced called Reel Satriani wherein Satch spent so much time whining over how the musicians, particularly Manut Cache (awesome drummer) didn't 'feel' what he expected them to feel in the music he'd created. He wanted them to play the exact first draft he made up with a dinky drum machine and the most mundane rhythm guitar on the planet and all but had a fit when Glen Johns suggested he let them have free rein to do what they felt would be best. This movie was all about the self titled album, which happens to be one of my favorite albums because the other musicians seem to have been allowed to 'play' too. So, back to Satchifunkilus... this album suffers from Satch's need to control all aspects of the music. It suffers from a dumbing down of the ensemble. There are a few great songs here, but nothing like Crystal Planet, Flying in a Blue Dream or even Strange Beautiful Music. Its unfortunate that we always have to wait for live versions of these songs to come out before they become great.

Free Music Review: Refreshing new stuff
Hit: 5 Stars

I have all of Joe's CDs, the first I heard was "Surfing", then "Crystal Planet", and loved them all but after a while the vibe started to get repetitive somewhat for me with his last couple releases. Till now! I listened to the new CD twice so far, and though a couple of the songs, including the chant song "I just wanna rock" were really not my favorites, I must admit they were still unique and interesting. This new CD to me is a bit different than what he has done before, and that is exactly what I was hoping for with this release. Seems that he is applying the "less is more" approach to several of the songs, which made them excellent and pleasant to listen to especially while cruising around. He seems to play
for the songs, and not just a bunch of notes to show off his amazing abilities that we already know he has anyway. I don't remember really hearing piano on much of his stuff before, and it works great here!. I very much recommend this CD.
