Free Music Notes for Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musterion of RockFree Music Review: Yet Another Work Of Art From The Master Hit: 4 StarsJoe Satriani has been a hero of mine since I heard "Surfing With The Alien" and was simply blown away....I had no idea you could play like that. Joe was pretty much my hero growing up and learning to play guitar, much like Hendrix was his inspiration. I have subsequently picked up everything the man has released, and have never been disappointed.
This album displays all of the elements of his unique style, including his virtuoso soloing and complexity ("Musterion" and "Overdriver"), melodic ballads ("Come On Baby" and "Out Of The Sunrise"), and his trademark soaring melodicism ("Revelation"). Although Joe might never go as "over-the-top" as he used to in the eighties, he remains a superbly talented musician and incredible player who singehandedly popularized instrumental rock music and inspired millions of players (inlcuding myself). After all these years, the man still tears it up and creates amazing and beautiful music that doesn't sound like anyone else. Recommended!
Free Music Review: Satch at his best Hit: 5 StarsFrom the first moment I listened to this album, I absolutely loved it. Being a big fan of intrumental rock, I have all of Joe's albums. I can say that this album is the best album he ever did. In fact every album is better than the one he's done before. I can't think of anybody else who can pull this off. I think he wouldn't do a new one if he thought he cannot top the previous one. And by improving I don't mean improving his play, I think there is little to be done on that side. It is just better and better music. His songwriting, which has always set him apart from everybody else, has reached new levels on this album. The first two songs are Satch at his best. "Asik Vaysel" who was a Turkish homeless poet, musician and who lived at the beginning of last century, is even little known in Turkey. He could not read or write and there is little to be found about him. It is amazing how Joe has managed to hear of him and use some of his tunes on the song he has named after "Asik Vaysel", which translated from Turkish means "Vaysel in Love". I think this song is one of the highlights of this album. Five stars for the greatest guitar virtuose ever.
Free Music Review: some flashes of brilliance, but also some real garbage Hit: 3 StarsThis review comes after only one listen-through, but I wanted to go with my first impressions. The first two and last two songs are great. I Just Wanna Rock is just a step above sucking badly. It's a lame concept, and the song is only saved by a pretty cool solo. Professor Satcha-Crapolis....uh, let's move on. Revelation is very good; Come On Baby is the obligatory wimpy love ballad. Now for Out Of The Sunrise...this song completely sucks in every conceivable way. It bites so hard, it's like a pitbull on your privates. That lame, looping drum track; the horrific, antiquated 80's pop synthesizer sound...this might be Satch's worst song ever. It sounds like it fell off of his Not Of This Earth album, with those other weenie 80's fillers. He doesn't redeem himself with the next track, which I won't even attempt to spell here. Suffice it to say that it involves an incredibly irritating introduction and closing, although it does clean up a little in the middle. Fortunately, Satch does redeem himself with the final two tracks. Both brilliant and reminiscent of the old master. Overall, this album is not his best effort by any means. I should have become suspicious when I heard that idiotic album title. I was hoping it was a bad April Fool's Day joke, but alas, somebody actually thought this was a good album title. Yikes. This man needs to get back in the trenches and kick some butt like he is capable of doing. As I said before, there is some great stuff in here, but the bad stuff far outweighs. A sad step down from the great Super Colossal album.
I purchased the CD/DVD set of this album, so I'll say something short about the DVD. First of all, the making of the new album-portion is a waste of time. All it does is focus on the making of I Just Wanna Rock. It's bad enough to listen to this lame song; to watch and hear the making of this lame song makes one beg for death. Basically, everything on the DVD is throw-away (yes, even the live performance of Surfing, which sounds like it's being recorded out of a well) except for the live studio performances of Ice 9 and Crushing Day. Crushing Day is, by far, my favorite Satriani song, and it was exhilirating to hear it played live, finally. Let's just hope he puts this song out on the tour.
In closing, thanks for reading my sarcastic review. I am a huge Satriani fan overall, and wish for future brilliance from the master.
Free Music Review: Average Joe Hit: 2 StarsThis was not what I expected form the new Satch album...very bland. I'm sure the album will sound much better live, as they always do, since Joe is such a great showman.
After giving the album a few listens I find myself only going back to 4 songs: Overdriver, I Just Wanna Rock, Professor Satch & Diddle-Y-A-Doo-Dat. The rest of the album is really flat. This is the first poor release since "Engines Of Creation". I'll still see him live because he'll jam these songs totally different on stage. Nice try Joe, but this effort falls a little short. Thanks for all the great music.
Free Music Review: as always, a couple jams are worth the cd.. Hit: 3 Starssince we know how talented satch is, it's hard to believe some of the tunes on this cd sound phoned in with a drum machine answering the phone. there are a couple songs on the cd that i know will sound great live. the song that will blow the doors off live is Asik Vaysel which pretty much makes this cd worth the purchase. after hearing it on the second and third run it sinks in the great effort joe puts in to it.. i just find myself wishing for more tracks like it on the cd.. for me it only takes one song to make the cd worth it and this cd will have that for most satch fans. please no more crowd chant songs though. nevertheless, keep on rockin joe!
