Free Music Review: Superb aural ecstasy! Among Strummer's best!

I must somewhat sheepishly admit I came to be a Clash fan after they were not a band any longer. I enjoyed their radio hits, but back when punk was current (in the historical sense of things) I was deeply into reggae.
I was totally averse to almost all the electronic based music coming from the UK and other areas in Europe. The pretty-boy hair band era of rock also left me shaking my head. There's just something primal in the way I find stick legged, big haired, cross dressing, make-up wearing pretty boys pretending to be bad-asses sad and unappealing.
That aside, I bought Clash on Broadway at a remarkably discounted price from a now long defunct record club. It was via a buy one get 2 free sale or something and COB was one of the free choices. It changed my world and opened my ears to what I had been missing! I had the complete Clash catalog (mostly US releases, a few imports) in my collection in less than a few weeks and added to it with every subsequent release since.
I also became very interested in the early punk movement and still enjoy punk today. At least, 80% of it anyway. Every genre has is posers. One of the things I liked about the Clash was the reggae influence that wove its way through some of their music. I watched every DVD I could find that starred them directly or indirectly.
Of course, from that came my love of Joe Strummer's music and my deep respect for him as a fellow human. The video release of The Future is Unwritten served to strengthen my respect of the man and the same named sound track CD gave me an ever deeper understanding of him. I know little of that has anything to do with the review of the disc at hand, but it's important, I think, to explain the backdrop of how and why I came to be such a fan. I began my exploration of Joe Strummer's post-Clash journeys a few years back. After hearing the first couple of his other efforts I was again hooked on the music.
Strummer, for me, was like walking through a nondescript door in a nondescript building and finding yourself in one of the coolest pubs/restaurants/social clubs, what have you that you could ever have imagined! It's a surprise that both stuns you with its excellence and leaves you wordless with how deeply it moves you. At the same time it makes you want to ask someone to kick you because you didn't "find" it sooner although you always knew it was there!
Now, all THAT being said, I have a few more superlatives to add to my review of this disc. The Mescaleros are my favorite of Strummer's various bands and musical projects. Much like how Crazy Horse adds a certain flavor to Neil Young's music, the Mescaleros do the same for Strummer. Together, they are not quite like him alone or him with anybody else. Until I heard this disc I didn't associate the song Appleseed to sadly long defunct John from Cincinnati series on HBO, but it did give me an "Oh wow!" moment. I liked everything on the disc and it was in heavy rotation for months after getting it.
It is on my Desert Island Top 10 list. To shed a little perspective there, I have about 7,000 titles on CD and LP so I have a pretty broad spectrum and selection of music to choose from for my listening pleasure.
If you're already a Strummer fan, this is all superfluous drivel. You already get it and don't need convincing. If you're a fan already and don't have this, get it. You owe it to yourself. If you are unfamiliar with the man and his music, you can't go wrong here with Global a Go-Go.
If you, among the uninitiated, asked for another sliver of advice I would recommend the aforementioned The Future is Unwritten soundtrack CD. Taken from excerpts of his BBC show, no other piece better shows the heart of Joe Strummer than to hear his words and the music he loved than that release. (The DVD is good but sometimes video is a distraction when trying to understand a musician. Best leave that to the ears alone.) Global a G0-Go is rollicking good fun and pleasing to the ears and spirit. It's a worthy addition to any music collection.
