Free Music Review: Country Music at its Best...
Hit: 5 Stars

I love music, especially country music. I enjoy listening to Taylor Swift, Sugarland, Carrie Underwood, and others--however, in the strictest definition of country music the above artists cannot be classified country. Joey and Rory are in the truest sense country music artists. How many "country" songs today actually showcase a mandolin, fiddle, or dobro? This cd is a masterpiece.

I saw Joey and Rory on Can You Duet, and I was a fan --however, I was still a little unsure about buying their cd (because after all $10 can be a lot to a poor college student) I needn't have worried this cd is fantastic. (This is actually the first review I've written on Amazon--so impressed I was by this cd.

**Play the Song** mid-tempo) 4 1/2 stars
I wasn't immediately taken with this song, but it grew on me. This song expresses exactly how I feel about country radio today. I've no doubt Joey + Rory have experienced this--he said as much at a concert--and I think it's a dang shame for one of the best country acts in years.

**Sweet Emmylou** (slow) 5 stars
The mandolin is beautiful in this song--I have never been a fan of Emmylou Harris (that's probably country music sacrilege :( ) but I relate to the fact that music can help us through problems--whether its Emmylou or someone else who sings it.

**Tonight Cowboy You're Mine** (slow) 4 1/2 stars
Beautiful love song. What's more country than singing about a cowboy coming in from a hard days work to the woman who loves him?

**Cheater, Cheater** (up-tempo) 5 stars
One of the cleverest on the cd. I seriously doubt that Rory has ever cheated on Joey but she sings with conviction and righteous anger that it's almost believable. One of the best songs to kick a cheater out with!

**Rodeo** (slow) 5 stars
Truly heartbreaking--akin to Garth Brooks Rodeo, but from the woman's perspective not a third party. It personifies the rodeo like it's another woman--very clever. My favorite line--"you steal his love away from me, 8 seconds at a time even when I'm in his arms I know you're still on his mind."

**Heart of the Wood** (slow to mid-tempo) 4 1/2
Hard to believe this was not written by Joey + Rory because it really sounds like it's about Joey's life. Good choice for the album. Great twist at the end that personifies the tree. (Kind of gospelyish at the end in case that's not your thing.)

**Tune of A Twenty Dollar Bill** (up-tempo) 5 stars
Cute lyrics--"when she opened up the front door, he was grinnin' like a possum." Catchy love story--

**Loved The Hell** (slow) 5 stars
Again at the end the meaning of the story kind of changes--I love that in a song! Great storytelling, and half the storytelling is in the singing. Joey does not have a lot of grit in her voice but you can still tell it comes from her soul.

**Free Bird** (slow) 4 stars
Fresh take on an old classic--I really like it. They performed it this way on Can You Duet, and it works. Kind of haunting; the steel dobro (often heard in bluegrass) is beautiful. Not my favorite but it has its good points.

**Boots** (mid-tempo) 5 stars
A love song to cowboy boots--My sister who hates country music thought this was dumb, but it's actually really cute, especially if you love your boots! Another great song--beautiful--my favorite line "they've seen lovers come and go `til we met the right pair at the rodeo."

**To Say Goodbye** (slow) 5 stars
I rarely cry when I listen to songs, but this one is a tearjerker. Joey's voice fits it perfectly--I think it's the best Joey + Rory sound on the cd. Harmonies are fantastic, their voices match perfectly, and as Naomi Judd says "you can hear the tears in their voices." The instruments are kind of background music--the lyrics and voices are the main focus. But it all fits--soars at the chorus, and makes me so sad every time I listen to it.

**The Life of A Song** (slow) 4 1/2 stars
Again the vocals/lyrics are the focus of this song. A good summary of the whole cd.

There is nothing fake about Joey + Rory, what you see is what you get. Their lyrics and vocals are beautiful, sincere, and touching--

What I love is that there are electric guitars, and drums on this cd but it fits--it doesn't overpower the lyrics or the singing like so many country songs today. Joey + Rory are not powerhouse singers, if that's what you're looking for try Martina McBride or Carrie Underwood; but their strength is in storytelling and subtle and understated vocals that cut right through a person--at least it does me. This is more traditional country music more like Hank Williams style than today's; that's what I love about it.

Most of the songs are slow, so if that's not your thing you might want to pass but definitely download Cheater Cheater, and Rodeo. If you love country music, true storytelling songs, and fantastic harmonies I enthusiastically urge you to purchase this cd--you will not regret it!
