Free Music Notes for John Adams [Television Series Soundtrack]

Free Music Review: A Stirring, Emotional Score
Hit: 5 Stars

After watching the excellent miniseries JOHN ADAMS on DVD, I knew I had to purchase the soundtrack. Rob Lane and Joseph Vitarelli have crafted a musical score for the film that packs the emotional power that was so much a part of David McCullough's book. From the patriotic "Opening Titles," a martial piece that somehow manages to convey that the drama it introduces is one of flesh and blood human beings, not wooden soldiers led by marble statues, to the soulful "Farewell to Adams," played in the film as John Adams and Thomas Jefferson lay dying on the fiftieth anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the music proves itself as important a part of the overall quality of the film as the fine performances of the cast. Also notable are "John Says Goodbye" and "The Villa," which evoke the music of the period. I often listen to this disc in my workshop, which is perhaps the highest compliment I can pay to any piece of music.

Free Music Review: Music for John Adams - the Movie - Stands on It's Own and More
Hit: 5 Stars

This sound track the work of composers Rob Lane and Joseph Vitarelli really evoke the emotions of the era and the people in their works.

Their work complements the efforts of David McCullough through his book and the people in the production of the movie, the actors, the cinematographers and all the others including Tom Hanks and the others in making of this series for which the soundtrack was created. John Adams (HBO Miniseries)

The music truly honors and complements the Founding Fathers, Founding Mothers and Founding Children for the sacrifices they made. Not only does the music accomplish these things, but it truly stands on its own.

Free Music Review: great listening more than once
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack is one that I can listen to more than once and enjoy every time. While not a musician, I find myself fascinated by the various motifs that are introduced and then reoccur from time to time. I also enjoy picking out the different instruments and melodies they play as the soundtrack progresses. I would to know how the two composers decided to divide the different scores because to my ear they mesh together very well. One might complain that the music lacks the technical expertise of Mozart, but who cares. At times the music is energetic and marshal and then very soulful and plaintive matching the episodes of the miniseries. Well worth the cost in my opinion .

Free Music Review: Inspiring, Pensive. Melancholy. Superb.
Hit: 5 Stars

The John Adams soundtrack is, in many ways as mercurial as the moods of the man portrayed in the HBO series. The tracks include inspirational, quick paced pieces leaving the listener determined. Many others offer a mix of variations on classical works (Schubert, Piano Trio in E-Flat), to slow-paced, quiet, meditative pieces for thoughtful contemplation or as background to a good book or a lazy afternoon. Lane and Vitarelli have put together an original score, and the Hollywood Studio Symphony's execution does it considerable justice. While not getting what I expected, I was nevertheless enthralled and pleased with the surprises. You will be too.

Free Music Review: FANTASTIC MUSIC!
Hit: 5 Stars

The soundtrack to the HBO Miniseries "John Adams" is a fantastic one! Rob Lane and Joseph Vitarelli have both created a beautiful score, capturing the heart and soul of the miniseries. Lane's work includes the title theme, which is a fantastic piece that opens the miniseries, and is a great one to listen to on its own. His piece "Declaration of Independence" is fantastic as well. As for Vitarelli, his piece for the sea battle is great, hearkening to the music from "Master and Commander." Together, they have created a truly memorable score. If you enjoyed the HBO program, then you'll want this CD in your collection!
