Free Music Notes for Swings Cole PorterFree Music Review: Classic Pop by A Promising Newcomer Hit: 5 Stars
I have to confess I didn't know John Barrowman from John Doe when I stumbled on this CD on Amazon through "links", I listened to the samples and wound up buying the CD!! It's good to see somebody fairly young who is out there recording classic-style pop music (not too young fortunately, spare me those unctuous wunderkinds on the big labels with big media campaigns who are so slick and false). Barrowman is quite an appealing singer although I didn't care for the rah-rah treatment given "One of Those Things" (especially the way he attacks certain lines and stretches them out showy like somebody on a 1960's variety show) or "Don't Fence Me In" (especially the corny jazz session intro). But he is quite good otherwise, and sings romantic songs like "In the Still of the Night" and "Ca C'est l'amour" with just the right touch, never with the smug smarminess of some of his better known rivals. I play this CD quite a bit and will probably get some of his other releases before long.
Free Music Review: A Classic Hit: 5 Stars
I had no idea who John Barrowman was until I stumbled across 'Torchwood' one night. I was instantly captivated. Who is this man and why haven't I seen him before??? Sorry to admit, I didn't remember him from 'De-Lovely.' Well, did the obligatory internet search and read all about him. I came across the amazon link to his CDs, read the review of this one and being a huge Cole Porter fan, figured, how could I go wrong? I have to tell you, I listen to this ALL THE TIME. I wake up listening to it and go to bed listening to it - it is that good. Personal favorites are: 'After You, Who?', 'Miss Otis Regrets' and the absolutely awe-inspiring 'Just One of Those Things'. And, all the rest. The arrangements are beautiful and smart, not overly modern, but not old-fashioned either. Thank you John for connecting the past and present so beautifully.
Free Music Review: The Best John Barrowman Ever! Hit: 5 Stars
I got this CD as a Christmas present and I've been listening it ever since. In the car, in the office, everywhere. I've been a fan of John for a long time and have most of his CDs, but this one is the best, period. The arrangement is superb and John's voice is as glorious ever.
I love the arrangement of "Anything Goes," I think it will be my theme song for 2005, it just makes me feel "it's okay, enjoy your life." What I couldn't get over with is "Miss Otis Regrets" it's such a haunting song yet so beautiful.
As the other review said, the fact John hasn't been given a major role on Broadway lately is a crime, but I feel like it doesn't matter when I'm listening to this CD. I highly recommend this CD to anybody who enjoys a great sound!
Free Music Review: Still Best Barrowman Album To Date Hit: 5 Stars
John Barrowman, Westend musical theatre star and better known in the U.S. as Torchwood's Captain Jack Harkness has produced numerous cds over his decades long career and his Swings Cole Porter is still his best to date. John's powerful yet lyric voice, which has earned him the nickname of leather lungs, is well suited to Cole Porter's difficult to sing music. John also states that Cole Porter's music holds a special place in his heart because of who Porter. This special feeling certainly shows through in his interpretation of the music.
This CD is only one of a few genres the John sings. His other work includes, musical theatre, pop and easy listening.
Free Music Review: Bravo Barrowman Hit: 5 Stars
It isn't often you come across a true master of the voice. This album is so tight and even you won't even realize it has ended. John is confident and the nuances that are thrown into each song really keep this one on top of his game. It is always a great feeling that not one song is bland or a throw away. It is also a rarity! Orchestrally, this CD has an ambience of recording studios of yesteryear. The acoustics are vibrant and alive. Notes soar through the roof and it is a welcome sound. His previous work "Reflections from Broadway" equally measure up. His vocal prowess and strength is both refreshing and welcome. Don't pass this up! It will amaze you!!
