Free Music Review: Growing Up to Appreciate John Barry

I fell in love to the music of John Barry. True, I had gone to "Born Free" at a young age and was amazed by how he integrated African instruments and rhythms into the soundtrack. Whst made me laugh was the pathetic scene where the young lioness Elsa is being "trained" to hunt by George Adams. He sics Elsa onto a warthog who repeatedly, with every increasing confidence, plows into Elsa with a whomp! Every run was accompanied by a bit of music which built up into longer and longer warthog runs and would jerk to a stop when that snout would hit Elsa. It was the first time I recognized how well the music could be crafted to fit the action of a scene.
But Barry really hooked me with that overpowering combination of teenager, James Bond, and (in my humble opinion) his best score for 007: "You Only Live Twice." The music soared with the heights of the mountains of Japan. Other scenes had the plucked short notes of the Japanese instrument, as delicate as the bashful look of a geisha from behind her fan. Later, all romantics will recognize that Barry did the simple, heartbreaking music for the Christopher Reeve movie, "Somewhere in Time." This was music that could make a man go back in time to find lost love and make us believe it was worth it.
With "Dances With Wolves" and "Out of Africa," you could close your eyes and recognize Barry by his love of the deep-voiced French horn (I hope I got that right) and simple repetition of simple phrases.
John Barry died on January 13, 2011, at age 77.
