Free Music Review: Tough All Over rocks!

I love Springsteen. I love everything about his stuff from the 70s and 80s. The Piece De Resistance (Passaic NJ) concert from '78 is perhaps the finest live concert ever. The album "Born To Run" deserves to be in the top 5 of all time. The songs from that LP are immortal. But the one problem Bruce had was in reaching a real popular audience. The single Born To Run didn't do it. Born in the USA from '85 is a valiant effort (Dancing in the Dark tries, but is only moderately good). My favorite pop Springsteen is actually "I'm Going Down", "Human Touch", "One Step Up" and "Brilliant Disguise". None are big pop songs.
Now, "Tough All Over" by John Cafferty has Bruce beat in every category. Its a better, more melodic hit. It has more fundamental heart than Bruce's pop songs. And it is so much more fun to dance to! And the video blows any of Bruce's away. I still cringe when "Dancing In the Dark" plays on VH-1. "Tough All Over" is the video Bruce should have done. It is full of raw energy, great cameos of real, working-class folks, and tremendously exuberant and exhilarating. And its a pure pop song that Bruce just never could master. John Cafferty deserves all the respect in the world. We love him in our house!
