Free Music Notes for Hedwig And The Angry Inch: Original Cast Recording

Free Music Review: Great music...a superior recording
Hit: 5 Stars

I bought this CD months before I saw the show because I'd heard comparisons to David Bowie and the Pixies. The music alone was great, but I love it even more after seeing the show. "The Long Grift" is on constant repeat mode in my stereo. By an odd coincidence I ended up living in the Riverview Hotel (which houses the Jane Street Theatre) for about two months when i first moved to New York, and I heard the show and ran into cast members every night. This original recording is outstanding, even if the current production has faltered a bit with the addition of a certain former brat packer. I do wonder why the song "Random Number Generation" is on the CD but not in the show. I think it's a great song and would like to know the context of it in the show. If you're a fan of rock and roll (not even necessarily musicals), this is a wonderful addition to your collection.

Free Music Review: The Perfect Homage to Hedwig
Hit: 5 Stars

If you are trying to decide which CD to buy-- the original live cast performance, or the film version-- go for the original cast. The film version is excellent, but the original cast version is absolutely amazing! It has more raw energy to it, not to mention more voices in the songs and a more overall 'rock' feel, thanks to Cheater's guitars, bass, and drums. John Cameron Mitchell is a much raunchier Hedwig on this version, and Miriam Shor's Yitzak is the perfect vocal complement to her. If that isn't enough to persuade you, this CD comes complete with unforgettable pictures and the words to all the songs. Also included in the booklet is a very intriguing and entertaining portrayal of Hedwig from a reporter who visits her dressing room for an interview.

In all, this album pays Hedwig the perfect and complete homage she so very much deserves and commands.

Free Music Review: Not fair to County to compare her work to Hedwig
Hit: 5 Stars

No offense to Jayne County or the few supporters of hers who have found their way to the Hedwig Soundtrack only to find (weirdly unsubstantiated) fault with it, but: if Ms. County were nearly as gifted at composing interesting, catchy, and beautiful songs as she has been at self-promotion, then perhaps a comparison between her oeuvre and the Hedwig recording might be appropriate. Unfortunately, since Trask/Cheater/Mitchell's work is one of the all-time great rock albums, period, never mind rock musical scores, it seems unfair to encourage Amazonians to shop County's records with the unrealistic expectation that they will live up to Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Anyone anticipating a sonic experience from County akin to what Cheater and Mitchell provide will be terribly terribly disappointed!!!

Free Music Review: A show/CD that shines like the brightest star*
Hit: 5 Stars

I have seen the show twice now and will be seeing it for the third time later this month. I love this show! Though I have not seen the original Hedwig (John Cameron Mitchell), Michael Cerveris is excellent as the "internationally ignored rock star." His intriguing performance and expressive voice embraces the music and lyrics as written by Stephen Trask. This show is amazing! Original, funny, touching, provocative, and poignant--all of this is captured on the CD. The CD has some of the best music/lyrics I've ever heard, so much so that I listen to it incessantly! So, if you have not seen the show and/or do not own the CD, go! This is a phenomenon that you don't (and should not) miss!

Free Music Review: ADDICTIVE
Hit: 5 Stars

When this movie was first offered on pay per view I was skeptical. I watched it anyway, and I was amazed. The music and lyrics are delightful. I'm a 46 year old grandmother, not your typical "ROCK FAN". After I watched the movie I researched it on the internet and found out more about JC Mitchell and how the movie came about.I ordered 2 copies of the CD. One for the car and one for the house. I also joined the "Hedwig" fan club.I also agree that John Cameron Mitchell should win a grammy. I can't believe how talented this young man is. It's truly amazing to watch him. You can really see Hedwig's pain, even though there are hilarious scenes. The music is a MUST HAVE.
