Free Music Review: Whoa!?!?!!??!!
Hit: 4 Stars

This album has got to be Coltranes'(or any other saxophonist) boldest work ever. The sheer power behind this album is mind boggling. Jupiter was by far the hardest one to listen to. It took five years before I could actually sit there listen to the whole album. When I first go the album I was a new commer to Jazz. I had some of Coltranes work, but only his early work like Blue trane, and Giants Steps. But I took a huge step too far foward when I got this album. I got thru 5 minutes of it. After that I was afraid to listen to the album. To this day I still can't understand the whole thing. While I believe that this album is a milestone in music, I would not recommend this album to anyone. Only to those adventurous enough to have their minds challenged and stretched and at times pummeled in ways that is beyond all human comprehension. This not for begenners.

Free Music Review: Bold stuff from Coltrane
Hit: 4 Stars

Accompanied only by drummer Rasheed Ali, John Coltrane takes his experimenting to dizzying heights with "Interstellar Space." This is as stripped down as it gets, yet it's in this format that Coltrane seems to draw some of his most interesting inspiration. I bought this not just because I'm a fan of Coltrane and all of his beautiful accomplishments, but also on the recommendation of several friends, who insisted this one of his best works.

This won't take "A Love Supreme" off my favorite Coltrane list, but it's definitely high up there. This is wonderful stuff, for people who aren't afraid to try new things.

Free Music Review: Listening tip
Hit: 4 Stars

Coltrane's last phase is not my favorite, but I think I have found how to listen to these recordings. They obviously don't function as background music, and active listening is also difficult, since there are no chord changes or melody (in any traditional sense) to follow. But if I close my eyes and relax, let the music wash over me, sort of like looking at those 3-D images where you want to unfocus your eyes, this turbulent music makes me very calm. While it's the polar opposite of new age music, I find the music to be meditative.

Since I'm a big fan of John Coltrane's work, I found this piece, done in 1967 to be an example of his mind.
I fully enjoyed it, and have added it to my collection of his music.

Free Music Review: Fierce limitations
Hit: 3 Stars

3 1/2

Though essentially variations on a theme...what a warped theme it is, and with duo attacks this intense yet subtly effective, even conservatives would do well to take notes. Even if some of Coltrane's latest can sound off-putting for abrasive jaggedness, IS relinquished much of the conscious squelching to peel back layers of intense devotion on higher melodic understandings.
