Free Music Review: Simply One Of The Best Christmas CDs You Can Own

This is just such a lovely collection of Christmas music by the late John Denver - I agree with the reviewer who noted caution with live recordings, because they can be hit or miss, but this is pretty much flawless. John Denver always reminded me in a peculiar way of the late Karen Carpenter, in that both individuals had such clear, bell-like voices that the listener often found himself looking at the stereo like, "Am I hearing that the way he/she really sounds?" Well, in both instances, yes - I have only recently begun to appreciate Karen, but John goes all the way back with me to junior high, when even the coolest group of kids had "Take Me Home (Country Roads)" blaring from their radio speakers. This album is a prime example of why, almost fifteen years after his death, John continues to sell, influence other artists and have studies of his life and music documented on PBS and elsewhere (I live in the Bay Area, and a few years ago, there was a class at Berkeley which delved into the importance of John Denver, no joke). A man who made every song he sang seem as though it were completely important to he himself, or he wouldn't be singing it, would of course record beautiful Christmas music. This CD has 24 tracks on it, the majority of them being Christmas-themed, and his version of "O, Holy Night" will leave you in awe, weeping or grateful that we had John for the short time we did. He also does beautiful renditions of "Christmas For Cowboys", "Away In a Manger", "What Child Is This?" and "Christmas Like A Lullabye"; lighter fare is "Jingle Bells" and "Rudolph...". Also on this CD are non-holiday songs, most notably live versions of "Roads..." and "Annie..." - you know, there have been alot of music surveys where the question is "What song do you associate with John Denver?", and "Annie" gets mentioned more often than even "Rocky Mountain High" (not on this CD). I would be hard pressed to answer such a survey question, having roughly two dozen favorites, but I will tell you, as a young woman growing up in the late 70s' and early 80s', there were many, many of us my age just hoping that, someday, we'd have our own gentleman to write a song on the calibre of "Annie" as a birthday or anniversary gift. Simply one of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs ever put down on tape, "Annie" as always flies far beyond the walls of the concert hall, and you can imagine it bouncing around and around off stars and satellites for eternity, like all true love does. In closing, if you're looking for a Christmas album, this is a wonderful choice, and if you want the extra gift of John's 'best' songs, well, you'll be happy with those tracks, too. You know, when I listen to John, I can't believe he has been gone all this time. I remember when he died, it was just a few weeks after I'd lost my own father, a Denver fan: It took me awhile to start playing John's music again, but when I did, the first thing that registered wasn't sorrow about either of them. It was gratefulness that we have the music left behind, and it was a smile for Dad...I know my father, and I know darned well he's talked John into a 47th encore of "This Old Guitar." John's like that for many of his fans - he means something personal. This is beautiful and timeless music - buy yourself a nice gift, and pick it up. Merry Christmas!
