Free Music Review: INFINITELY BETTER THAN THE SUM OF THE HISTORY!
Hit: 5 Stars

Fogerty is an icon who made records the old fashioned way: he earned the respect for the direct, no frills homage to rootsy rock and roll. In fact, he might rightly be credited with having inspired the roots renaissance.
This collection is so much more than just a culling of hits that those of us from a certain age, with thinning hair and expanding waistlines, mightremember. These songs still reverberate with an urgency and a directness that grunge, punk, and whatever else only vaguely understood. In the course of 3 minutes, Fogerty could capture everything from baseball's field of dreams to the political hypocrisy that sons of the wealthy still exploit. Anyone smell a US president here? Anyway, for someone from Bakersfield, California, Fogerty's heart, and certainly his soul, dwelled poetically and rhythmically in the Delta. Voodoo, Northern Mississippi blues and the earnestness of folks who called them as they saw them ring out in his lyrics. The music was always immediately recognizable, and instantlt infectious. Fogerty was brilliant all through his career.
There are some terrific live performances here that justify the CD all by themselves, and actually leave you wanting more. When is the last time you could say that about a Greatest Hits type of package? For my money, I'd have loved to see more from PENDULUM, but to Fogerty's credit, he has in fact picked the very best of what he stood for. Hopefully sales of this disc will encourage him to record again. He is an American classic, and this is an extraordinary resume.

Free Music Review: Nice Remastering Job
Hit: 5 Stars

Probably no mainstream artist for the last 30+ years has been screwed over by the music business more than John Fogerty. Now that the mess with Fantasy Records is behind him, he cooperated on the release of his first comprehensive retrospective of his career. A couple of things are worthy of note. First, the remastering of the CCR tunes on this release is excellent and surpasses the 2000 remasters of the CCR catalogue. Second, besides his work with Creedence Clearwater Revival, there wasn't a whole lot of material to choose from. I was glad that the 1985 "comeback" album 'Centerfield' was represented by two cuts, though I might have suggested the addition of "Rock and Roll Girl" which was issued as a single. And others have mentioned that "Almost Saturday Night" included here is not the version from the 1975 'John Fogerty' album, which would have been the recommended choice. My choice for biggest oversight, however, is "Jambalaya (On The Bayou)" from the often-overlooked 1973 'Blue Ridge Rangers' LP which was also released as a single. This is a rare gem that sounds very much like a CCR song. While I liked the selection of the CCR songs here for the most part, I would have disposed of some like the overplayed "Travelin' Band" in favor of "Jambalaya" and would dump the mediocre live version of "Hey Tonight" included here for the CCR studio version or another song such as "Don't Look Now"; "Wrote A Song For Everyone"; or "Someday Never Comes."

Free Music Review: Excellent overview of Fogerty's 35+ yr career
Hit: 5 Stars

Is there a new trend? First we got a compilation of Sting's Police and solo tracks, then there is the Mark Knopfler's excellent compilation of his Dire Straits and solo stuff, and now this, the very first compilation of John Fogerty's CCR and solo output. I think that yes, it is a new trend!

"The Long Road Home: The Ultimate John Fogerty/Creedence Collection" (25 tracks, 77 min.) is tipped heavily in favor of the CCR hits (18 of the 25 tracks are CCR songs), and rightfully so. Interestingly, four of those hits are presented as live versions from his 2005 tour. While normally I'd frawn on that, in this instance these songs in fact are excellent. (Compare the studio version of "Fortunate Son" agains the scorching live version--both of them on this CD--and you'll see what I mean.) As only seven solo songs are included, they actually blend in pretty well with the other stuff: "Centerfield", "Old Man Down the Road" and "Deja Vu (All Over Again)" are very good to say the least, and they stack up well against the CCR songs.

When you distill the very best of John Fogerty's 35+ yr. career down to 77 minutes, it is quite amazing how good his music remains to this day, of timeless quality really. I had the good fortune of seeing Fogerty on tour earlier this year, and he put on a rocking show, while clearly enjoying himself (again?). "The Long Road Home" is an excellent "best of", and highly recommended.

Free Music Review: Fogerty Through The Years
Hit: 5 Stars

The Long Road Home is subtitled the ultimate John Fogerty Creedence Collection. While it is tough to make an appellation like that because someone's favorite tracks are always left out, this twenty-five song collection comes pretty darn close. Spanning Mr. Fogerty's almost forty year career the collection include his beloved CCR hits like "Proud Mary", "Born On The Bayou", "Green River", "Who'll Stop The Rain", "Down On The Corner" and two versions of "Fortunate Son" to his solo works like "Centerfield", "Old Man Down The Road", live versions of "Rockin' All Over The World" and "Almost Saturday Night" to the title track from last year's Deja Vu (All Over Again). The only complaint is that the collection relies heavily on his CCR work and that two of his solo albums, the overlooked Eye Of The Zombie and Blue Ridge Rangers are not represented at all and the two tracks from his self-titled 1975 album are recent live version not the original versions from the out of print album. Those are minor complaints about a truly first rate release that shows the greatness of one the best songwriters in rock history and a major influence on countless artists.

Free Music Review: CCR like you've never heard them
Hit: 5 Stars

My first impulse when I checked out this release was to pass it by because there was so much previously released material on it, all of which I already have in my CD collection. After one listen I was hooked by the quality of sound. With advanced technology the CCR songs that everyone has become familiar with come forth with an entire new dimension. Add to that the previously unreleased live material and this one is hard to do without. The songs are not chronological, but if you've seen John Fogerty live lately he mixes it up, opening with CCR songs and peppering the set list with his solo material, so listening to this disc reminds you of a live show especially with the inclusion of the recently recorded live material. The superior sound quality of this disc far outweighs the downside of buying perviously released material, and the inclusion of six (6) live songs and selections from Fogerty's solo offerings makes this an interesting addition to any CCR fan's collection.
