Free Music Review: Clean and crisp and packs a punch
Hit: 4 Stars

John Fogerty's latest, Revival, sounds about as good as anything he's done. In that, for a classic rock era artist he's lucky since, like Bob Dylan, he's always sounded like an old man.

The production on Revival is clean and crisp which makes a perfect showcase for Fogerty's funky swamp guitar. The songs are all well-written, in particular the political ones. In his last release he wrote a classic, subtle anti Iraq War song, "D?j? vu all Over Again." This time, he's so angry and frustrated at Bush and company that the subtlety is out the window. In "I Can't Take it No More" he screams at Bush:

I can't take it no more
I can't take it no more
Sick and tired of your dirty little war
I can't take it no more

You know you lied about the casualties
You know you lied about the WMD's
You know you lied about the detainees
All over this world...

In "Long Dark Night" he tells us, about the consequences of Bush, that "it's gonna be a long dark night before this thing is done." No doubt. It's a great example of using the old traditional blues and folk forms (Mama's in the Kitchen...)

Georgie's in the jungle
Knockin' on the door
Come to get your children
Wants to have a war
...

Brownie's in the out house
Katrina's on the line
Gulf is a disaster
But Georgie says it's fine
...

Rummie's in the kitchen
Messin' with the pans
Dickie's in the back
Stealin' everything he can

But it's not all anger and politics. He's got a few regular songs plus some beautiful utopian songs. One about the Summer of Love, another about Heaven, "Don't You Wish it was True."

What if tomorrow
Everybody was your friend
Anyone could take you in
No matter what or where you been

What if tomorrow
Everyone had enough
The world wasn't quite so rough
Lord don't you wish it was true...

Indeed.

Free Music Review: It all comes together
Hit: 4 Stars

After years of living in the aftermath of Credence which is not the greatest Rock band it was nice to John bust out with great stuff. Helped along by Kenny Aronoff setting the pace this cd has it all. From country to what in this age could be considered hard rock. Listening to this makes time fly.

Free Music Review: niced to have John back!
Hit: 3 Stars

Nice to have John back. A bit of politics and a whole lot of rockin'

Free Music Review: Back to the Future
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not going to get into a long-winded song-by-song analysis of this great CD. That's been done enough already. I would focus on the collection of great tunes as a single entity. From the moment I slipped the CD into the player I was taken back to my youth (no small feat as I enter my mid 50's). It was suddenly 1978. The music fit as good as my favorite old Levi 501's. The sound is classic Fogerty. There is a hint of CCR, and reminders of all the best stuff Mr. Fogerty has done since then. But the really great thing is it's a sound that transcends time. It can easily be enjoyed by those not old enough to remember Creedence. Might even make you want to go out and buy some old CCR just to see what you missed. This is truly a masterpiece by an old master. Those who don't like it seem to be obsessed with the couple of political and anti-war tunes. I wonder, where is it written that it's OK for millions of people to go on political talk shows to air their views to the world, but not OK for an artist to express theirs in the format they are most comfortable with? Skip the politics and enjoy the music.

Free Music Review: Wonderful CD.

Purchased this for a relative and they love it. He sounds as great as he did thirty years ago, it's like his voice never ages. So if you like this artist or someone similar, then take a flyer and purchase this cd.
