Free Music Notes for The Long Road Home: The Ultimate John Fogerty/Creedence CollectionFree Music Review: As it turned out, maybe Zaentz CAN dance Hit: 3 StarsTHE LONG ROAD HOME: THE ULTIMATE JOHN FOGERTY/CREEDENCE COLLECTION marks John Fogerty's business reunion with Fantasy Records founder Saul Zaentz. At one point in their tumultuous four-decade relationship, Fogerty had written a song about Zaentz in which he warned, "He will steal your money." Now, it seems, they see eye to eye.
So THE LONG ROAD HOME seems a good title for this collection, which comprises popular songs John Fogerty recorded as the lead singer/songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival as well as in his post-CCR career. Regarding the CCR songs, THE LONG ROAD HOME includes every song most would expect, except for the band's cover versions of "Susie Q" and "I Heard It Through the Grapevine."
But regarding John Fogerty's solo songs, this THE LONG ROAD HOME comes up short. Most glaring is the omission of "Rock and Roll Girls," Fogerty's mid-1980s comeback hit from the CENTERFIELD album. Another must-have not appearing on this CD is "Change In The Weather," from EYE OF THE ZOMBIE.
Lastly, on THE LONG ROAD HOME you will have to settle for live versions of two great songs found on the album JOHN FOGERTY, "Almost Saturday Night" and "Rockin' All Over The World." Neither was a hit for John Fogerty but Dave Edmunds' cover of "Almost Saturday Night" was a rock radio staple and Bruce Springsteen regularly performed "Rockin' All Over The World" on tour. Too bad THE LONG ROAD HOME does not offer the Fogerty studio versions of those two.
THE LONG ROAD HOME's packaging lacks imagination, as if they chose the first handful of John Fogerty pictures they found in a desk drawer. The design even recycles the photos, with thumbnails on the CD cover and the same shots inside. The notes read as though a publicist, not journalist, wrote them.
If John Fogerty's Creedence Clearwater Revival career interests you more than his solo work, THE LONG ROAD HOME is a good start. But if you seek the cream of Fogerty's post-CCR crop, this CD is incomplete.
