Free Music Review: John Takes His Listeners to the Empyrean
Hit: 5 Stars

John Frusciante is an amazing artist, a unique song-writer, and a remarkable guitarist (so expectations were high when I purchased this album). Initially, after listening to this album once (from track 1 to track 10), my thought was, "Great, John's gone soft. Where's the hard rock? Why do rock 'n' rollers go soft?" After I finished listening to the album, I was disappointed because I was expecting something heavier. (And by the way, this album isn't all soft; there are several moments of hard rockin'.)

Disappointment fades. I listened again...and again, a third time (from track 1 to track 10). Music has a tendency to grow on you when you take the time to appreciate it. Then, after several listens, I grabbed my dictionary and looked up the word, "empyrean." The "empyrean" refers to the highest heaven, or the Celestial Kingdom. Knowing this, I better understood the content and the overall feel of this album.

This piece of music, as John might say, is a representation of the empyrean, the highest heaven. Therefore, this music is meant to sound heavenly (not heavy or rock 'n' rolly). I was expecting a rock `n' roll experience, but John delivered a heavenly experience.

John: thank you for taking us to the empyrean with your guitar; thank you for taking us to a place where rock music almost never dares to ascend.

The Empyrean rocks...in a soft, heavenly sort of way. Buy this album and enjoy!

Free Music Review: Heavenly is right
Hit: 5 Stars

First before the beginning. And not a baseball reference. Oh my goodness. you just sit back and listen. It's so slow. Oh God. So slow. It's just wonderful. Beautiful. I'm telling you John must be on a wavelenge with like Jesus or something. The album and that song are just so different than all of today's commercial music. Were there are so many whores willing to do what ever the music industry wants. This definetely includes country music. Country music is all whores. Sorry but no other way to really say it. John's music and this album are really anti commercial. There not meant to be highly succesful. But oh does John put his heart and soul into it. The low tech recording. All real musicians except one drum track on 5. The whole thing is good. Very good. Unreachable track 3. God. There hasn't been music like this since the mid 70's. Make you druel. John singing pooring out his heart and singing some really disturbing lyrics but he so honest and passionate. It's so real. I bought this ablum at a best buy in feb 10 on a fluke. Since then. I probably have listened to it almost exclusively. In the insane fast paced world we live in. I'm glad john is realling us back into honest and good music. I don't know what his deal is. If he uses and he aint Jesus. But I think he is drawing maybe from his faith. Sounds to me like he is. Then maybe the residual affects of drug use. All I know is it's very good. I love it. Thanks John.

Free Music Review: Great Sound Quality
Hit: 5 Stars

I've always felt writing a review serves no practical purpose. I don't believe reviews actually influence how other people feel about a certain product. But here I am, writing a review, and I do it because I feel the need to give credit to John for creating an album with such a good sound quality.

Most records these days are mixed and mastered to make everything in it sound "loud", damaging the sound quality permanently (google *loudness war* for more information and see why I wrote *loud* in quotation marks). But The Empyrean is not a victim of this process and as a result, it has a great dynamic range. You can hear every instrument clearly and the differences in volume in the songs are still there to be enjoyed.

The reason I give John credit for this is because I know he not only worked on the music on this album, but also took care of a lot of the technical stuff. Good for him, I say.

Also, the music's pretty sweet! And because it was recorded, mixed and mastered appropriately, you get to actually be able to play it like John advised, as loud as possible, without feeling like your ears will fall off.

Bottom line: The Empyrean is a great listening experience. For me, anyway.

Free Music Review: Another brilliant work from John Frusciante - Amazing concept album
Hit: 5 Stars

I'll start off by saying that I'm a huge fan of John Frusciante's solo output with my favorites being 'Niandra Lades', 'DC EP', 'Curtains' and 'Shadows Collide'. 'The Empyrean' is quite a bit different from his previous output. It's more dreamy and certainly more esoteric (if you can believe that anything can be more esoteric than 'Niandra' :)

I had to give it a few listens before I really connected with it. It really is an album that should be listened in its entirety to fully appreciate.

It's an interesting meld of melodic and experimental styles all at once: Quiet, then hits you over the head, then sends you off on a journey and so on.

If you're a John Frusciante fan this is a definite must. If you're looking to delve into his solo work for the first time, you may want to check out 'Shadows Collide' or 'Curtains' for a start then move onto 'Niandra' and 'Empyrean'. Of course, this all depends on your taste as I find all of his output superior and unique work that is unparalleled in this day and age of manufactured corporate music.

Give this brilliant musician a try, you won't regret it!
