This is a great recording. I recently purchased this along with Richard Thompson's new 'The Old Kit Bag' and I can honestly say that these two guys are at their peak of their art. They have aged like fine wine. 'Beneath This Gruff Exterior' is as good as 'Bring the Family'. Great rockin' music made especially potent with Sonny Landreth's guitar. There's not a throwaway track on the record. The beauty of Hiatt's music is how simple it is yet it's truly original and continues to be rewarding after repeated listens, a classic in my mind. This is exceptionally good as driving music for a Friday afternoon.
