Free Music Review: Very brilliant, very essential progressive "music"

How do you pigeonhole something like this masterpiece? I had a very hard time even calling it music, because in some ways it transcends the term. Music fans not familiar with Yoko Ono may be shocked to hear what they do on this CD. For Yoko, pretty tame, for John, a little out there, for "Top 10ers" (people who actually LISTEN to crap like *N'Sync and Backstreet Boys) unbelievably crappy, for true music fans, a true masterpiece of sound art and progressive rock.The historical significance of this album is not nearly as much as the "Wedding Album" which outlined John & Yoko's wedding, honeymoon, and their unique non-violent "Bed-In" protest, buy it does have it's own background info. This album marks, in John's words, the first time John and Yoko made love. "It was midnight when we started "Two Virgins, it was dawn when we finished, and then we made love at dawn. It was very beautiful." was John's quote. Interesting... As for what's on the CD: The only complaint any open-minded listener will have is that it is much too short. Less than 30 minutes long, the whole of "Two Virgins" is a few scant minutes longer than the first track on "Life With the Lions," "Cambridge 1969." Playing records and sound effects to back up their "insanity," you hear birds chirping (or SOME kind of whistling) through most of the first track. Meanwhile, John and Yoko are hammering out sounds from every piece of instrument beneath the blue sky. John mumbles a few nonsense words and phrases, sentences which don't seem to fit, ("I don't know Honey" in the deepest, funniest voice he can muster) and Yoko does what she does best, a little screaming. (Pure emotion simply cannot be put into words.) The screaming isn't nearly as long or intense as in other recordings, or as Yoko has been branded for, so don't worry. It is extremely hard to describe this album in words, you MUST listen to it to have any kind of idea what is going on. It's beautful (and occassionally ugly) noise on this album, all lacking in harmony and rhythm, but in the end the album DOES have rhythm, and like most Avant Garde recordings, you definitely have a flow of unusual emotimos during and after listening to it. Track two is a lot like track one, "Two Virgins" is a long continuing piece, not like the three-minute radio trimmed songs we're used to in the '90s. Still, it was seperated into two pieces, just like the original. There is also a bonus track on the album, "Remember Love" Yoko's song which first appeared as the B-side to the wonderful "Give Peace a Chance," recorded in the same hotel room. Not as memorable as the actual "Two Virgins" album, or "Give Peace a Chance," but not bad. "Two Virgins" is noisy, occassionally cacophonous, but definitely worth a shot. I can only speculate what kind of controversy this album stirred up in the Sixties. One thing is for sure, it was definitely a lot more famous than today, "Two Virgins" is something you definitely need to search for. (Of course, if you're reading this, you've found it.)
