I overdosed on Lennon's solo work in my youth and thought when this came out, "I've heard it so many times, will it really affect me anymore?" Well, surprisingly, yes. It's been years since I listened to the pain, but when I heard "God" again, I started crying in my car on the way back from the store. Although not that much different from the Plastic Ono Band album version, I felt it was miles above the original. That voice! It'll just rip your heart out. And all the other cuts- it's just brilliant- and to think, it was all in just ten years- John Lennon is one of the great mythic figures of the 20th century- and he'll remain so- and this PROVES IT.Free Music Review: Amazing box set showing Lennon inside the studio

For such a huge collection of material that is presented on these 4 cds anyone could easily overload on such a catalogue of music. The John Lennon Anthology box set is really a great thing to own, it has John in acoustic mood, live mood, drunk moods and even full band moods. With great performances of songs most of which remained unheard until this release. The book that comes with it is also full of interesting writings and details. I would have to easily give this 5 stars and it comes highly recommended... especially to hear him playing "Imagine" live on his own with an acoustic guitar!!!!
Too many highlights to even mention so I say get it and be amazed.

The release of this boxed set has me caught up in emotions. While I'm listening to the songs one after another, I feel that John is still alive, making music with a message and with passion and emotion. But when the music is over, I feel that same void I felt 18 years ago, when I woke up for school and heard the most dreaded news short of losing a family member. I will be forever thankful to Yoko for allowing John's fans to share in her loss, and yet to still educate the musicians of the 90's how a true genius works. This album is worth all the money you spend on it. It falls nothing short of excellent. THE JOHN LENNON ANTHOLOGY is chocked full of demos, outtakes, and studio chatter that give you an idea of what it was like to record with John Lennon. This box has almost 100 out of 104 unreleased recordings, all of which are fascinating insights into Lennon's musical and songwriting talents. It is hard to pick highlights off an album as exceptionally good as this, so all I can say is that this is a MUST and belongs in every Beatles fan's collection.Highly recommended.

I read a lot of reviews before buying this. Once I got it and started listening I realized all those reviews, with their complaints about this or that, were beside the point. Just like this review is. If you want this man's music, then get it. I'm a great fan of alternate takes, works in progress, spontaneous work, and tomfoolery. It brings you closer to the person who made the music you love. If that's what you're after, you'll find it here. If you just want the officially released stuff then obviously you should stick with that. 'Nuff said.
