Free Music Review: Faithful to the Excellent Sound of the LP

This superb re-issue of John Lennon's WALLS AND BRIDGES does indeed have a booklet; a 12-page booklet, in fact, which reproduces the entire booklet issued in 1974 with the original 12-inch LP and adds a picture. (One picture from the photo session in the original insert has been replaced with a similar one from the same session, but this is not a drastic change.) Lennon's original list of musicians is intact, so it includes such humorous psuedonyms for himself as Mel Torment and the Rev. Thumbs Ghurkin. The booklet reproduces the full-page history of the name Lennon from the original insert, with Lennon's snappy hand-written response to the claim that no one with his name ever achieved anything: "Oh, yeh?" So, attention to Lennon's original has been paid. The lift-the-flap cover isn't there anymore, but, the pictures which were part of it are there, so, I say this packaging is a pretty good tribute to the original. The LP, when first released in 1975, had pristine sound, which had not been the case with Lennon's previous album, MIND GAMES, which had muddy sound. (MIND GAMES has been re-mastered recently and sounds much clearer than it used to sound.) So, this new CD of WALLS AND BRIDGES is not a drastic change from the original LP, because the LP was crystal clear. What has been done here is a restoration to the original sound. The first CD issue of WALLS AND BRIDGES didn't sound nearly as clear as the vinyl but the new release does sound like the vinyl and that's great. Some of the tracks have been merely re-mixed, but some have been re-mastered. I think this means that the restoration team did not want to change anything too much and that they were careful to re-master only when necessary.
By the way, I paid $18.99 at an independent record shop, so I don't see this as in anyway overpriced. I imagine the big record outlets will sell it for a few dollars less.
The three bonus tracks are perfect for this CD. One is the live version of "Whatever Gets You Through The Night" which Elton John and John Lennon played at Madison Square Garden, one is a demo of "Nobody Loves You When You're Down and Out" featuring Lennon's voice and his accoustic guitar and the third is a brief but interesting promotional interview Lennon recorded for EMI records when this album was first released. It is the last track on the CD so the interview does not interrupt the music.
Lennon is in command here. If the horns are a bit heavy, they do match the somber mood of this intelligent work from a man who was spending too many nights at after hours bars and knew it. Jesse Ed Davis's curvaceous guitar sound is vital to WALLS AND BRIDGES. If you think of "#9 Dream" and love the opening guitar, thank Jesse Ed Davis.
This is Lennon the craftsman. He once described "#9 Dream" as a "written" song, adding that he hadn't invested any emotion in it. Perhaps what I admire about this album is its lack of overt emotion. Lennon's understated performance here is what makes it great.

The careful burnishing of John Lennon's daunting legend usually obscures one telling fact: the former Beatle endured a long and troubling artistic slump in the mid-'70s. Indeed, his five-year retirement/house-husband phase may have been one of the shrewdest career moves he ever made. Cut in Los Angeles during his prolonged "lost weekend" estrangement from Yoko Ono, Walls and Bridges too often sacrifices the sublime for the ridiculous--that is, when it's not being altogether superfluous.
