It's extremely rare these days that you can find an artist that encompasses the lyrical and musical talent that John Mayer does. At 23 years of age, he is writing music that a 70 year old musical veteran would be forever jealous of. The official major-label release of John Mayer's "Room for Squares" is one of the most amazing albums I've ever had the pleasure of hearing and owning. And my cd collection is pretty extensive. You'll find no O-Town and Dream in my collection.
Lyrically it is heartbreaking, uplifting, and comforting all at once. Invoking emotions that you forgot voice and song could still do. Musically it will make you tap your feet and bob your head even in public places. It is an album that you can listen to all the way through and rediscover each time. I don't think each track as "good or bad". John creates at such a superior level that each song is already above much of today's standards in Pop/Rock music. He really connects with many of the issues that plague "twentysomethings" these days. And he puts it in a way that you never would have thought of.
From the opening track "No Such Thing", a "look at me now" song that's basically about where life takes you after you're out of school and still dreaming, to the beautiful closing track "St Patrick's Day" in which he describes the relationships you get into out of need and slight desperation around the holiday season from November to March, this is a must have for any fan of Rock/Pop. Every song will make you smile and go "damn, those are some tasty tunes!"
Fans of Mayer will wonder if this new release of RFS is worth the price. I have to say it's worth every penny! With the addition of "3x5" and the 7 remixed tracks, it is a sweet package. I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.
