John Stevens possesses the rare ability to take a song and deliver it the way the great crooners could back in the day; it's refreshing to hear him sing so well. And to think he's just getting started in his career! He can only go up from here; and that's pretty special. He should be graduating from Boston's Berklee College of Music any day now; and I'm sure he will go on to record more albums. The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent and I love that artwork, too.
"Come Fly With Me" starts the album with John singing his heart out; the jazzy arrangement works well to complement John's vocals. His voice reminds me a bit of Tony Bennett; only maybe a little bit higher in pitch--and it sounds very easy on the ear. "Come Fly With Me" features John squarely front and center and that's quite all right by me! Listen also for John to do a splendid job on "My Blue Heaven;" "My Blue Heaven" uses the piano to great advantage and John never skips a beat, either. How's about that brass?
"Someone To Watch Over Me" gets the royal treatment from John Stevens; he delivers this with panache and again the elegant arrangement enhances the ballad all the more. Wisely, the musicians stay in the background; they never steal the show away from John and that's very good. "Here, There And Everywhere" sounds great when John sings this Lennon/McCartney tune; it shines brighter than silver and gold combined and I could never tire of hearing him deliver this tune. Similarly, "All Of Me" shines; John does this with a lot of energy and a striking musical accompaniment. "All Of Me" sounds very energetic and it all holds its own very well. John opens up and belts this one out more so than he does some of the other numbers on this CD; it shows he's a belter when he wants to be one!
"I Only Have Eyes For You" gets a very sensitive treatment from John who sings this to perfection--and beyond! The strings are just wonderful and this tune lacks nothing--this is all THAT good. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is certainly a major highlight of this album. "It Had To Be You" is another elegant lounge sounding number that John aces as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing; wow, how he does this one up right! It's very smooth. Not only is this music romantic; it also perfect for relaxation after a long, hard day at work when you can just kick back and relax with a glass of your favorite wine.
John sings "The Shadow Of Your Smile" very passionately with a gentle bossa nova touch; this impresses me greatly. John plays a bit with the key modulations, too, to put his own stamp on this classic ballad. The CD even ends wonderfully with John Stevens performing "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" is yet another classic that is safe in John's capable hands; he does this faultlessly.
John can easily handle the entire Great American Songbook. I'm very excited that he's getting out of school now; he could and should record and perform so much more! He has incalculable talent; and hopefully he will share his gift with us for a long, long time to come.
