Free Music Notes for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Free Music Review: Vintage John Williams
Hit: 5 Stars

This soundtrack just goes to show that John Williams can still write great music if he wants to. Frankly, some of his other recent soundtracks did nothing to entice me to buy them. Saving Private Ryan, for instance, was quite forgettable. But Harry Potter and the Sorcerers's Stone brings back the John Williams we all know and love. And although I still have not seen the movie Harry Potter, I have read the books, and the musical themes fit the spirit of these stories perfectly. The themes are magical, mysterious, and full of wonder. Some people have criticized the music as being too childish or too whimsical. But that's exactly what John Williams was trying to do with this soundtrack; make whimsical, childish music. One might as well criticize John Williams for making the Imperial March too ominous or making the Raiders March too heroic. I say that if the music is doing what the composer intended, then it's good. So if you want a soundtrack that does its job, then buy Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

the master gets better and more refined with age. How does Williams do it? I am not a Harry Potter fan but I am a Williams fan, and this is without doubt one of his most majestic and assured scores to date. It is a work of art in its own right, an instant classic which will be remembered for years. The quality of the music is extremely high for a Hollywood mass market movie. It sounds like a soundtrack for a musical from the 1960s, echoing Williams "Fiddler on the Roof" and even the great Rogers and Hammerstein musicals of the 50s and 60s. And you get it in the 21st century! All the years of Williams writing music for the movies over the years has culminated into a orchestral sophistication and artistry worthy of the grandest of classical compositions of yore. Of course he borrows certain musical phrases from Ravel's Daphnis and Chloe, not to mention Benjamin Britten (as you'd expect in an English setting), but he goes the extra step to make the music uniquely John Williams. Bravo John Williams.

Free Music Review: Pure Magic
Hit: 5 Stars

After I saw Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone on the silver screen, I literally became obsessed with the books. I blame it all on the movie, though it truly doesn't do the book justice. The aspect of the film that left the greatest impression on me was the music. I knew immediately that I wanted the soundtrack, though it took me a few months to finally buy it. As soon as I owned that CD, I tossed it into my Discman and fell madly in love with John Williams' creation. From the first note of 'Prologue', to the final chord of 'Hedwig's Theme', I felt as if I'd been transported to the magical world of Hogwarts. The score moves from upbeat to enchanting to haunting to heart wrenching and all the way back to triumphant. Tracks like 'The Invisibility Cloak...' and 'The Face of Voldemort' place you in dark corridors and eerie rooms, while 'Harry's Wondrous World' and 'Leaving Hogwarts' leave you feeling rejuvenated. This charming (no pun intended) soundtrack has so much to offer.

Free Music Review: Still the best
Hit: 5 Stars

This is still the best score out of all the movies. Don't get me wrong each film has it's own tone and needs to vary, but this score hit the mark perfectly. Anyone who tries to tell you that it's unoriginal because of small 3 second sections that resemble what another master has done is just an idiot. My response is, "welcome to the world. Nothing is fully original anymore. You take what has worked in the past, adapt and perfect (in rare cases). That's what's made film scores work for years now. There isn't one music writer who hasn't taken from another, who either influenced them in the past or just had something great. If you don't like it, don't watch anymore movies. I can't tell you how many times I've heard the 'Aliens' soundtrack show up in either a film or trailer at random." Anyway, the other films' soundtracks are good, but not like this. This was perfect like "Star Wars," "Jaws," and "Indiana Jones." There's just a certain magic to how it flows.

Free Music Review: How I miss John Williams!
Hit: 5 Stars

Being from Boston, I always associate the Pops with John Williams. He's a Beantown prodigal son, and hearing a score like this makes the loss of him SO hard to bear - even now.

Honestly, I didn't know ahead of time that Williams composed the music for Potter, but it was pretty obvious as soon as the rolling titles came up that THIS was his music. It's beautiful. The melodies are magical, and complimented the movie perfectly - there's a child-like wonder in the theme that suits Potter. From the Prologue all the way to the last track on the disk (Hedwig's Theme), you can actually SEE the scenes playing in your head. That's how memorable this music is.

I would recommend this to any John Williams fan, as well as anybody looking for something soothing, fun, quiet, and magical. Actually, I would recommend this to anyone now that I think of it . . . you will not be disappointed with this score. It may be one of the best yet!

Happy listening!
