Free Music Notes for John Williams - Greatest Hits 1969 - 1999

Free Music Review: Oh...My...God....
Hit: 5 Stars

Movies can be good on their own, but without music, they simply wouldn't measure up to what they would be without it. Film scores can sway you into the moment, or take you to another place and time. They are crucial to a film. No one person's music has made audiences believe and feel what they are seeing and hearing in a film than the maestro, John Williams. Not only do I believe that film scores begin and end with Williams, his music, his sound, his touch, seems to be as American as apple pie and coca cola. I have no idea why the Amazon review would say that he may not be everyone's taste. If you like, love, respect, and appreciate great music and talent, then you will not only know most of his most famous pieces, but you will love and cherish them as well. Plus, his scores are probably the most famous, well known film compositions in the history of cinema, give or take a few from other artists. He also was honored, just here the other day, at the Kennedy Center Honors. He seems to be the voice for American audiences and cinema. He is mostly known and recognized for his ongoing relationships with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, and the work he does for their films. Many other films he has worked on, and subsequent scores, may of gone overlooked or are simply forgotten. But they are here. From the smashing anthem of Spielberg's disaster "1941", to the beautiful score for Oliver Stone's "Born On The Fourth Of July", there are a number of scores here that are breathtaking and may not of gotten the notice they so rightfully deserve. Others in this category would be his score for Spielberg's feature film debut, "The Sugarland Express", or his work for the Tom Cruise/Nicole Kidman film, "Far And Away". The hauntingly pretty and holiday like theme for "Home Alone" is here, and it sounds very similar to his score for the recent "Harry Potter" films. I wish this disc was new enough for that score to be here. It isn't. His work for the score for "Schindler's List", is one of the most beautiful and haunting film theme's I have ever heard. I always think of "The Godfather" when I hear it for some reason. His anthemic theme for the 1984 Summer Olympica is here as well, and it has always been a classic. If only his work for the Nightly News was included here as well. But it's the big, most famous scores here that always draw the most attention and fanfare. His work on these don't just create a scene, or a moment, but they become it's own self. The "Superman" theme, the greatest hero them ever written, is so Heroic and uplifting, that you wish the themes for later superhero films could be something. The Indiana Jones theme from "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" is another masterful stroke of a hero theme. No one does themes like that but Williams. What's genius is that these two heroic themes fit the character and film so perfectly. They don't become the same with similar hero type movie themes. There are three tracks here from the "Star Wars" films. The main theme being one of the most exhilarating film scores ever. Just as good is the "Emperor's March" from "The Empire Strikes Back". No one can create a tense, suspensefulm chilling mood better either. That brings us to "Jaws". How many people went to the beach for years afterwards and not thought of that theme?. That is the genius of John Williams. While there are numerous other gifted composers and film scorers, Williams stands above all others. Why?. His music stays with you. It stays with you and effects you the way a normal, great, classic top 40 hit song would. Or a movie itself. No one can measure up to the magic this man has created when the lights dim, the screen snaps to life with moving images, and there is a bucket of popcorn in your lap. He moves us, he scares us, he makes us believe, and he takes us to places no one else has. He is a master, and most of all, a genius. Thanks for the memories and the music, John. The movies are a better thing with you in the game.

John Williams - Greatest Hits 1969 - 1999 Poster

Japanese 2 x Blu-Spec CD pressing of this classic album. The Blue Spec format takes Blu-ray disc technology to create CD's which are compatible with normal CD players but provides ultra high quality sound. Sony. 2009.
For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde
