Free Music Notes for War of the Worlds AlbumFree Music Review: good, not great Hit: 3 StarsSaying that a John Williams score was a little disappointing is kind of like saying that the dinner you had at the best restaurant in town was a little disappointing: yeah, it's true, but where were you going to get anything better?
Williams, at this point, has created so many truly awesome scores that it's not only hard to keep track of, but it's also hard to tone down expectations every time a new project comes along. Secretly, I always expect each Williams score to be the greatest thing I've ever heard; because, you know, there's a decent chance it will be.
Sad to say, "War of the Worlds" ain't that score. But neither is it bad. It's just a bit less memorable, a bit less thematic, a bit less inventive. Never, though, does it fail to be good.
I'm especially fond of the track "The Intersection Scene," which has some great moments of eeriness. And "The Confrontation With Ogilvy" is also fine scoring.
A big complaint: couldn't the Morgan Freeman narration on those two tracks have been isolated as narration-only tracks? As is, they sort of mar the music, which I'd like to hear complete and on its own. That's why I buy score CDs!
All in all, this is a must-have for Williams fans; for others, it's iffy at best.
