Free Music Notes for Get InsideFree Music Review: Great jazz guitar player Hit: 5 Stars
This is a very good CD of excellent jazz guitar with a slight blues tinge. Very good technique and recording.
Free Music Review: Musicality and monster chops Hit: 4 Stars
This is a most enjoyable set of instrumentals, and the only reason I haven't given it 5 stars is because I heard the man live, playing a killer set, before I bought this CD. In an intimate club setting, Johnny A burns the house down, and plays with a raw intensity that this studio recording does not quite catch. It's an excellent record nonetheless, full of masterly yet understated guitar playing, and solid songwriting. The soloing is concise and every note counts. If you really want to spoil yourself, see the man live with his trio...very awesome, and not just for guitar geeks.
Free Music Review: Get Inside...but leave the door open. Hit: 3 Stars
Having loved "Sometimes Tuesday Morning", (it's definately a desert Isle keeper), I can't remember waiting for a CD release more than "Get Inside". It would be a monumental task to outdo or even equal his first CD. All of Johnny's chops are in there. But this CD is more groove driven and less melodic IMO. He treats the old classics better than anybody, but seemed to either run out of ideas or hastily chose where to take his originals on this CD. Perhaps he didn't have time to develope them like he wanted. I'm not disappointed with Get Inside. With the exception of cut seven it's a solid effort. It just pales by comparison to his first release.
Free Music Review: Missing the rest of the band Hit: 3 Stars
Johnny A. is agreat guitarist, but he has not matured to realize that great music takes a synergistic band, that is allowed to "play" their instruments too. For pure guitar, OK, but I gave my copy of this CD away.
