Free Music Review: Sometime Tuesday Morning defies description
Hit: 5 Stars

On one hand, this CD is a straight ahead instrumental rocker, but Johnny A really shows how great he is with ballads, such as his covers of "Wichita Lineman," and "Yes it Is." In fact, those two ballads alone are worth the price of the CD by themselves.

But Johnny A can flat kick your ass, too. He's a biker and his tunes like Oh Yeah, In the Wind and Two Wheel Horse are named for his other hobby. And they rock, but there's nothing cliched or tired in his style. He always seems to be looking for new ways to say something.

I saw him in person at the Triple Door in Seattle sometime in February 2005 in a power trio format and he played most of the tunes on this album. The guy is one amazing guitar player. He played his signature Gibson hollow body, fitted with a vibrato tailpiece (Bigsby? It was like the old Chet Atkins "country gentleman" model) and he utilized a battery of foot pedal effects, coming eventually through a pair of Marshall combo amps. The guy had some of the best clean tones I've ever heard from anyone, anywhere.

Basically, Johnny A is a guitarist who has complete command of the instrument. And he's got a rocking soul that cuts loose on originals and covers alike in a style that's all his own, and that's saying something these days. If you love great rocking/rockabilly guitar, combined with really cool ballad playing in the power trio format, this CD is just what you're looking for. In fact, I guarantee you'll be knocked out.

Five stars.

Free Music Review: Keep an eye on this man!
Hit: 5 Stars

Johnny A is truly a rising star. I saw him live "by accident" and was very happy that I was introduced to his music. He is still relatively unknown, unfortunately. He seems to be quite popular in Boston, where he is originally from, but even here in NJ, I haven't heard his music played on the radio yet. He deserves more than this. There is way too much crappy music around that's polluting our radios which almost makes it a crime not to give this guy the sort of fame he deserves for his work. The fact that you have over 40 reviews of his CD and most of them give 5 stars certainly says something for how solid, original, creative, and high-quality his music is. Truly a work of art. He stands right up there with many guitar greats like SRV, BB King, Albert King, Eric Clapton, and others. However, in contrast to these guys, Johnny's CDs are all instrumentals, and the fact that he is able to capture the sort of attention and admiration that he does with guitar instumental work is both noteworthy and testament to his talent and creativity as both a songwriter and a guitar player. His style is extremely diverse, and I was amazed at how many different tones of sounds he was able to extract from one custom-made Johnny A signature Gibson guitar. I mean, wow. After listening to this CD and his other new CD, try to see him live, and you will not be sorry. Johnny is simply a gem, and I really hope his career flourishes to the sort of fame and wide recognition he deserves.

Free Music Review: Tasty, refreshing, melodic guitar - a must!
Hit: 5 Stars

When I heard Johnny A's version of "You Don't Love Me" on the radio here in Boston, I knew I had to buy this disc. I wound up buying 4 more and giving them away to friends because he was doing self-indie distribution before he got on Steve Vai's label. Johnny's tone and taste drew me right in - and if you are looking for a guitar PLAYER, instead of wanna-be's, here's your guy. Put this disc in your player and you won't be taking it out anytime soon - it's addictive!

A plus for me is that Johnny plays Gibson guitars through Marshall amps (gets me out of my Fender rut!), and his great tone ranges from clean to snarly effortlessly. I caught him live a couple weeks ago at the Acton Jazz cafe, and he brings the goods into the club, too - no studio tricks. (He's also a cool guy and a pro...)

Johnny is unabashed in his influences, and he brings them all in, from Atkins to Wes (Montgomery), with taste and originality. His original songs are great ("Oh Yeah" is a standout, but all of the originals here are strong, no filler), and his treatment of Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" and Lennon/McCartney's "Yes It Is" are great in taking the emotion of the originals and taking it to the next level with style. I'm already looking forward to his next release....

Don't know much about Musicology... Don't know much about Discology... But I do know what turns me on.... And this album does it wonderfully.

Just before Christmas, I heard the last half of an incredible guitar song on my favorite station here in Portland OR (105.9 K-HITS) They didn't announce the artist at the conclusion of the song. I called the station the next day but I couldn't get a response. For the next few weeks I called some more then I called record stores trying to explain what a miracle sound I had heard and tried to explain it so I might find that sound again and buy the album... No Luck!! Finally last week I heard the sound again. Oh Joy.. Oh Rapture !! The DJ announced that the song was entitled "Oh Yeah" by Johnny A !!!!

I called around town and no one had any of Johnny A's CD's in stock. (What a backwards town this is)So I ordered it and it arrived today. I am on my 9th continuous replay as of this missive. I am so unbelievably stoked with this album.

I can't explain in musical terms what this CD has going for it. All I know is that tomorrow I will be ordering the other album by Johnny A.

I am totally hooked. My suggestion is for you to Run - Don't Walk to your favorite music store and buy This album.. Quickly

Free Music Review: Cool, smooth and approachable!

Upon hearing this disc I knew two things immediately, a) I had to buy a copy, b) I had to see the act live. I have now enjoyed five performances by Johnny A's. Band. While I find the record to be very impressive and enjoyable (over and over again) you must see the act live to gain a total appreciation of this man's craft. I am also anxiously awaiting the follow up album; I know it will be worth the wait! He played a few tunes on the upcoming album during his last performance, simply stunning! He also covers Johnny Rivers: Memphis and it simply left me awe struck; he expanded that very nice ' Rivers' riff, wow! Johnny also does a killer Hendrix medley these aren't simply covers these are more like tributes. I don't know if either of these gems will be on the album, but I sure hope so. Lucky to have a club here in Vermont that Johnny frequents often!

I'm not a guitar player but I do love guitar music! I've feasted on this album for a few years and never tire of it. Keep em' coming Johnny and I'll see you in Natick, MA in May '03' !
