Free Music Notes for Sometime Tuesday MorningFree Music Review: Get this man a signature model Hit: 5 Stars
I must add to the chorus. Sometime Tuesday Morning is the most original, most enjoyable disc I've purchased in the last ten years. I can't believe it's taken so long to discover Johnny A. It's thanks to avenues like NPR, World Cafe, and independent radio stations (in San Diego that would be the newly reestablished KPRI...kudos) that genuine talent is still rewarded. It's a Clear Channel world, but we don't have to live in it.Anyway, Johnny A. is going to sell alot of Bigsby-equipped Les Pauls and Marshall combo amps. Are you listening Gibson? I want a Johnny A. signature model LP and I want it QUICK! This disc is one of those breakthrough events that send guitarists like me back to the woodshed, reminding us that there are still unexplored worlds of tone, rhythm and sheer musicality. Buy this CD. Don't even hesitate. You can say you were there when....
Free Music Review: This Guy Can Play!! Hit: 5 Stars
I first heard the song"Oh Yeah" on the radio about 2 months ago. A couple of weeks later I decided to buy the CD "Sometime Tuesday Morning". The truth must be told my friends, this is one of the best instrumental recording's that I have ever heard! Man, this guy can play. Johnny A. is a guitar player that sounds like other great players, yet has a style that is all his own. There is not ONE bad song on this recording. All 12 songs are Top Shelf . My 3 favorites are "Oh Yeah",( which is the only one that I've heard on the airwaves)," Wichita Lineman", (absolutley beautiful), and "Walkin' West Ave".( Smokey,Bluesy and Spooky). I can honestly say that this CD is so good, it would be ruined if it HAD vocals on it. If you like smooth, clean and tasty music, then this CD is for you!
Free Music Review: Cat's Pajamas Hit: 5 Stars
Listening to World Cafe last night while taking a bath with my pet cockatiel Zisl dozing on my head, I heard a guitarist come on that made Zisl leap straight up in the air. WHO ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH WAS PLAYING THAT BODACIOUSLY TASTY HOT'N'COOL ALL-OVER-MUSICDOM ABSOLUTELY ORIGINAL GUITAR? It was no one I had ever heard before by any stretch. His distinctiveness is in your face yet subtle. His joie-de-guitar is blatant yet restrained. His tongue-in-cheek musical references are over-the-top. His throw-away virtuosity is a shimmering silvery undercurrent in the deeps. 'Twas Johnny A. All my vows to resist buying more CDs flew out the window. Very next morning (today), in fact it was sometime Tuesday morning, I had to go out and get SOMETIME TUESDAY MORNING. Go, you too, now. Johnny A Rules.
Free Music Review: Old School Musicianship Hit: 5 Stars
In so many ways this guy reminds me of the studio guitarists working in L.A. in the 70's and 80's. Larry Carlton, Dean Parks, Jay Graydon et. al. The material selected is well suited for his style of playing, and he knows when to lay back and when to lean on it a little more. His phrasing is absolutely top shelf. If there is a bone to pick it would be that his dynamics could be made more interesting in range. However, that's a small complaint when compared to how well he chooses notes for his single line work, and the other qualities within his playing. The final track showcases his talent in the best way, IMHO, with a solo the equal of anything ever put on any Steely Dan song or anybody else's. Definitely 5 star stuff (well, you could say 4.5 but that's at an absolute minimum). A fine artist.
Free Music Review: Simply Marvelous Hit: 5 Stars
One of the most satisfying, original, guitar albums to come along in years. This guy has abilities and creativity to spare. As soon as you think you know what his next phrase will sound like, he does a turn-around that completely surprises and delights you at the same time. Every time I play this CD I hear it again for the first time. There is a lot in there. I am so glad I took a chance and bought this disk. I, too, am anxiously awaiting Johnny A.'s next CD. I hope this one catches on like wildfire. This album is a jewel, a diamond. [...], here is guy giving us real, generative, music. This is the kind of music that inspires other musicians and composers. If you love American guitar, you will love this recording. If you play the guitar, listening to this music will make you a better player.
