Free Music Review: These are the Greatest Hits????
Hit: 2 Stars

I'm a big Johnny Cash fan, not to mention a fan of country music generally. I'm giving this CD three stars not because it's not good to listen to, but because it's false advertising. This CD has a couple of the classic Cash songs (Don't Take Your Guns to Town, Boy Named Sue, Ring of Fire) but it is nowhere near being a complete list of his 16 greatest hits. There's no The One on the Right is On the Left, there's no It Ain't Me, Babe, there's no Ballad of a Teenage Queen, there's no The Night Hank Williams Came to Town. How Riders in the Sky and John Henry got onto this CD defies all logic and imagination.

There are much better compilations of Cash's work out there, including the 2-CD Essential Johnny Cash that came out right before his death, that are far more appropriate for either the hard-core or the novice Cash fan. That said, even a mediocre collection of Cash's best works is better than 90% of the country out there. But that still isn't an excuse for how incomplete this album is.

Free Music Review: I don't get it!
Hit: 1 Stars

OK, I really like Country music, love George Strait, Allan Jackson, Vince Gill, Tim McGraw etc....so it can't be that I'm not in tune with the music, but I don't get this idol worship of Johnny Cash.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of all of countrydom, I have to say that I've seldom seen an artist who was so not...uhmmm...good and yet was elevated to demi-god status.

I mean really, let's toss the colorful stories and the fabled life of the "Man in black" and talk music..vocals..that's what Country is supposed to be about right?

The man had a shaky, pitch challanged voice to say the least, in other words he couldn't carry a tune to safe his life. His delivery was at a constant monotone and his vocal range spanned about 2 notes and that's singing off top of his lungs. His songs made next to no sense and he even lacked the old TWANG that is all but a pre-requisite for any Country singer...male or female, past, present and future.
I mean, listen to George Jones, Buck Owens, Loretta Lynn, Wylon Jennings, Merle Haggard...all contemporaries of Johnny Cash, they ALL had a Country sound. Not this dude. He was like a bad rapper before rap was even invented.

I bought this CD because, after his passing, the media made it seem like one of the greatest singers of all time passed and I felt like I must have mised something...maybe the songs I heard by him were his B-side releases or practice sessions, recorded while he had a terrible cold....that would have explained it.

But after having bought this CD in hopes of discovering long lost treasures and musical gems never to be repeated in my lifetime, I was a bit disappointied to say the least.
Track after track is the same off-pitch, monotone, twang-less, what the heck was he smoking/drinking, boy named Sue in a ring of fire stuff!

Sorry folks, may the Man in Black rest in peace, but I for one can't say I will miss his artistic contributions to Country music.

Free Music Review: Don't bleep #@&* out!!!
Hit: 3 Stars

I've always wanted to have a little Johnny Cash on the shelf, so I went for this collection. It's got many of the standards, which is nice. BUT A TRACK OR TWO HAS BEEN EDITED TO REMOVE PROFANITY. I find this to be profane. While there may be an indication that this is the case somewhere in the item information, I missed it. Now I will have to buy (from a music store where I can listen to the tracks first and ensure they are not modified) some more Johnny Cash to get the real track. . .

Free Music Review: the man the legend
Hit: 4 Stars

Jonny Cash lyrics will never be forgotten he always speaks from the heart. You can always tell what the man went through in his life by his music. He is the orginator of country music and this box cd set proves that. It is amazing and evey fan should own one.
