For those convinced that beauty is a cosmetic thing--the equivalent of a Sears painting you buy and hang because it harmonizes with your furniture--the deep weathered-wood furrows in Cash's aging voice will no doubt jar and upset. But Cash has been everywhere and done everything, and to this listener, those scars, those tear-tracks, those laugh-lines and crow's feet, make all the difference. "Hurt" is a twofold wonder: it proves that a) Trent Reznor was a great songwriter and b) Cash can make any song his own. "Give My Love to Rose" has never sounded so tragic. "Personal Jesus" glowers. "Desperado" suddenly seems to predate its creators. And "In My Life," already a sweet but sincere sigh of nostalgia, gains a whole new dimension, sung by a man whose long life, deep pains, and deeper loves have granted him the final great gift which most artists never achieve: authority. Closing with "We'll Meet Again" adds a final touch of much-needed whimsy without ever dispelling the pathos. Here is a moving, meaningful work by a great artist nearing his end. He may be with us for years to come, and sing many more songs (God, I hope so), but no would deny (Cash least of all, I think) that there are fewer days ahead than behind.
Lucky for us, the man that gave voice to brooding youth and responsible maturity can now guide us toward the waning years, teaching us how to remember, how to be grateful, and how to squeeze every last drop from the lives we're given. An unforgettable album.
