In this, his first of four deliveries of American recordings, just accompanied with a guitar and letting his spirit surface, Cash delivers on the promise. Song after song, verse after verse, you can feel his soul pouring out of his mouth. He wraps up a collection of twelve delightful versions of folk songs with one very funny yet still soulful track recorded live, "The Man Who Couldn't Cry".
The album as a whole stands solid as a tribute to all that the man in black was able to do creatively.

The start of the american years (1994-2004) for Johnny Cash. This is the one I love most it's Cash stripped down the way he sounded best. This record features song's like Leonard Cohen's "Bird On A Wire",Danzig's "Thirteen" and a few Cash originals. The final four records from Cash were the most truthful, soul searching albums ever. Each one is a small glimpse of the talented soul who recorded them. A soul I miss everyday but I know Johnny and June Are watching us enjoy the musical legacy they left us. Johnny Cash was a favorite of mine since his TV show days.
However, I noticed that except for his work with the Highwaymen his studio releases were not promoted and I heard he was no longer favored in Nahsville.
When I heard that Rick Rubin was working with him I didn't worry too much. Interviews showed Rubin to be a very savvy guy and I was right not to panic. This album and the releases that followed are truly an amazing comeback for someone who never really left us.
The striped-down approached works on this album and the song choice is good. Any fan of Mr. Cash should own this and all the Rubin produced recordings.

Really enjoy this CD a lot. It's my very first Cash CD, although
I've always liked his music. It's no wonder he has been so loved for so many years.
