Free Music Review: good but it's the weakest American

"American V: A Hundred Highways" is similar to its four predecessors in that it has Rick Ruben's typical handling of Cash in a bare bones, folksy setting. Usually, it's just Johnny and his guitar. This release is a break from its forerunners when it comes to quality control. The contemporary covers just aren't as compelling or recognizable as Johnny doing Beck's 'Rowboat' or Geoff Mack's 'I've Been Everywhere.' The traditional material is also softer as 'God's Gonna Cut You Down' just can't compare to Solitary Man's 'Wayfaring Stranger.' The original material is also less substantial as a tune like 'I Came To Believe' doesn't measure up to 'Country Boy' as played on "Unchained." It's no coincidence that this disc was posthumously released; it's unlikely that Johnny Cash would have approved. While there's a quality control issue, there's also no bad music here. Johnny's voice sounds good, especially considering his physical condition. 'Love's Been Good to Me' is the highlight among otherwise decent songs. The issue here is that the songs don't meet the high standard that the previous American recordings set. These songs would have been a welcome addition to "Unearthed" or a similar release of music worth hearing but not strong enough to wear a Roman numeral. Unable to give Johnny anything less than five stars, the zealots will vote this review down but the listener should appreciate shades of gray. "American V: A Hundred Highways" is worth having, but make it the final disc in your American collection.
