Free Music Review: Good bye, Johnny.
Hit: 5 Stars

Today -

A hot day in July spent in the cold

- marks the median of this year that still feels young.

And on this evening,

of a day fading slowly into the sunset,

Not a single breeze stirs my heart.

Fireworks brighten the sky,

And the dark corner of the room.

A record is playing,

first time in years,

a record makes me want to cry.

It's never easy,

To say good bye.

It's never easy,

To see all the suitcases packed up,

sitting neatly by the door.

Been running for a long time,

God's gonna cut you down,

We will see you on the last train leaving town,

leaving a trail of broken melodies.

Every note frames your ruined instrument,

A poetic elegiac vibration,

fading into the shadows.

And I came to believe,

That love's been good to me.

I'm a character in your fable,

Of a train traveling northbound,

Across a thousand rivers and a hundred highways,

Traveling down these tracks of love and mortality.

Into the sea.

Free Music Review: At Death's Door Cash Delivers A Wrenching Final Bow
Hit: 5 Stars

"American V - A Hundred Highways" finds Johnny Cash at death's door. The listener feels as if at the funeral itself. This is no pick-me-up. Unlike "American IV" which had its share of outlaw Cash, this recording is The Man In Black about to cross over. Nonetheless, it is beautiful in its raw vulnerability. The voice, though strained and ravaged by time and sickness, still packs a wallop. Raspy, out of breath and as reflective as ever, Johnny Cash apparently had a few things left on his mind. These songs find Cash ruminating over his mortality, and reaching out to his Higher Power as he prepares for the end.

Highlights include: "If I Could Read Your Mind" - a tear-jerking affair as Cash, clearly struggling, manages to deliver a deeply moving interpretation in that one-of-a-kind baritone. And just try to hold back the tears during "The Evening Train" -an undeniable tribute to his late wife. It's a stunner. And "The 309" - the most upbeat of the tracks - is a gem.

This entire collection sounds like a man putting everything in order before his final call. On "American IV", Johnny sounded as if he wasn't quite ready to call it quits. With "American V" it seems as if he's finally ready to go...what a treasure.

Free Music Review: the man leaves the stage
Hit: 5 Stars

I finally did it. Broke down and bought the last album that can be considered "real" by Mr. Cash. I kind of held off 'cause I knew it would feel like an admission that it's over. The well known story is ended. I knew it had but was in a sort of denial, 'cause Johnny made you feel like you really knew him and was your friend and I don't want to let my friend go. It's been such a grand ride, starting when I was a boy and hearing "A Boy Named Sue" and moving into different styles but always aware of the man in black and really finding him when he joined Highwaymen.
Wow. What a closing statement. What other weak voiced old man has had such an effect on music. I have little to add in what to say about the songs. Sweeping statements reflecting a life that was maybe over documented. A man who let us see his strengths as well as weaknesses. A strong man and yet full of humility. What would be hyperbole for most fits John and this album is another reflection of his life. His passing leaves an ache in many but for some of us the glorious hope of seeing him again leads us in hope just as John often sang about. I'll end now. Seems four winds have been calling me and I need to go listen.
Goodbye John,
See you soon

I am by no means a fan of country music. Most of it does not interest me. One of the few artists I love and can proudly admit is Johnny Cash. Johnny has such a wonderfully rich, warm voice that always brings a tear to my eye. I recently came across his last album "American V: A Hundred Highways" at my local library. I didn't think he could outdo "American IV: The Man Who Came Around" but he did with this album. The twelve song album is a haunting reminder of the legendary singer/songwriter. I could hear in his voice that the man in black was coming towards the end of his life. I could hear the weariness in his voice. I mean that in a good way. I think his weariness added an emotional depth to each song that is rarely heard in music nowadays. Rick Rubin did a great job of maintaining an intimate, raw sound to the album. I felt like I was in the studio watching Johnny performing. I loved every song. Johnny sang with such heartfelt conviction that it broke my heart. May the man in black rest in peace. He will always be missed.

Free Music Review: I'm a believer
Hit: 5 Stars

Mr. Cash was a man of few words, so I'll try to be succinct here. "American V: A Hundred Highways" may just be the best of his American Recordings work. As others have noted, Johnny Cash balances poignancy with power and he views death, not with fear, but with a view toward new life.

He wrote two of the CD's best songs, "Now I Believe" and "Like the 309," which are both deeply personal and heartfelt. He also does great interpretations of classic songs like "If You Could Read My Mind" and "A Legend in My Time," which take on added meaning in the context of his singing. I have all of his American Recordings, and many other albums of Johnny and June Carter Cash. I know...Johnny Cash is not typically "chick music." But there's something real and absolutely genuine about this man in black that I find completely captivating. Seldom before has such strength been clothed in such brokenness.

This CD reflects all that was Johnny Cash, which makes it totally essential for any serious music fan.
