Free Music Notes for American V: A Hundred HighwaysFree Music Review: Though Gone, Cash Is Still With Us Hit: 5 Stars
I feel weird buying Johnny Cash albums three years after his death, but his music is still very good. Ravaged by the approach of death, Cash's voice is still powerful despite the loss of depth and range. His lyrics are, if anything, better than they've ever been; much of that is of course directly related to the decidedly spiritual bent his music took near the end of his life. Though many of the songs on this album fill me with a sorrowful hollowness while listening; afterwards, as the music and words fade away, I feel uplifted. I've been listening to Johnny Cash all my life, and it wasn't until he was gone that I realized how much his music, whether it was lively or foreboding, pleased me tremendously. I miss him, but I've still got him.
Free Music Review: Free From The Chain Gang Now Hit: 5 Stars
The last album from Johnny Cash is an absolute masterpiece with brilliant songs that truly convey a deep message.
From the first strokes on the guitar strings on "Help Me" till the last one on "Free From The Chain Gang Now" you get to hear Johnny perform songs with soul and authenticity. Important themes are life, death, love, journey through life. The atmosphere and sound is beyond belief and it really leaves me with the impression of a man who has been through good and bad times, but now he is "free from the chain gang".
I've rated it 5 stars, but compared to most pop-albums this one is beyond being ranked in such a manner. Truly outstanding.
Free Music Review: A must have Hit: 5 Stars
One of John's best. When you've been a fan of one artist for as long as I have, you tend to like everything that artist does, even if it isn't as good as you think it could(should) be. I felt that way about many things John did with Rick Rubin. I've longed for the day I could hear John perform with his band (especially Bob Wooten) again. I guess Rick never felt the same way. Bob isn't here and hasn't been on any of the American recordings which is sad and unfortunate, however in this compliation of recordings Rick and John were at there best (at least at thier best considering John's health). Great songs sung by an icon makes for great music ... simple as that!
Free Music Review: Total Justice to a Much Missed Legend Hit: 5 Stars
I don't have a lot to say other than if you don't buy this album, you are missing out on some of the greatest music this man has put out. I've been a Johnny Cash fan for over 30 years, and I feel that this album is a very fitting, yet sad, end to a phenomenal and brilliant career. His version of Gordon Lightfoot's song "If You Could Read My Mind" causes goosebumps and "Rose of My Heart" is as touching a song as you can find. With that said, every song within this album is worthwhile. If you are a Johnny Cash fan, you must have this album. It is, by far, some of the greatest work the man has done, and I mean that with all my heart. I still miss him so much.
Free Music Review: A Modern Rarity: An Album That Feels Like an Album Hit: 5 Stars
So many times these days we have artists release albums with mostly mediocre songs, with one or two hits that carry the CD into decent sales. Even a lot of Cash's work was like this to be honest. Not this latest Album! It is to be listened to as a whole. It is an incredibly emotional masterpiece and a phenomenal work of musical genius! Every song is fantastic, every song is emotional, his voice is full of heartache and sorrow and feeling. The album as a whole is very dark and painful and not meant to be broken up song by song. The compilation is near musical perfection. This is truly Cash's and Rubin's finest work!
