Free Music Notes for Complete Live at San QuentinFree Music Review: Cash's best live album-6 stars, not 5 Hit: 5 Stars
The LP is a shadow of what a truly great concert this was. Here we have the rebel, Johnny Cash, at his uncensored best. The concert explodes at the beginning with Big River and I Still Miss Someone. It's entertaining to hear Cash rebel against the guards, and Grenada Television (recording the show for English television). His San Quentin gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. He truly captured the feelings of the inmates (San Quentin, I hate every inch of you), and even playes a full encore of the song. His band and vocalists are in prime form, as they improvise around Cash. Sometimes Cash falters, and his guitar is out of tune, but it only adds to the raw, rough edge of his style. Perhaps the best reward is the un-bleeped version of A Boy Named Sue, one of Cash's best songs. In all, 18 songs, including an ending medley. 10 songs on the original LP, and not near as much stage banter. Buy this disc, it's a must. Cash at his Music Review: Cash Money Hit: 5 Stars
Johnny Cash recently released a box set titled God Love Murder. These themes are all represented on this masterful reissue of his only number one album on the pop charts. He touches on God with "Peace In The Valley" & "He Turned Water Into Wine", Love on "Darlin' Companion", "Ring Of Fire" & "I Walk The Line" & Murder on "Folsom Prison Blues" & "Wanted Man". He is not confined to these themes, but they permeate his music. It always seemed appropriate that Mr. Cash played San Quentin. The prison was known as "The Rock" and he is the rock of country music. He is unwavering in his beliefs and his albums are as solid as a piece of granite. Besides the great music, this release is a must for any fan as it contains all 17 songs played at the show compared to the mere 9 on the original release.
Free Music Review: How Would Johnny Cash Follow At Folsom Prison ? Hit: 5 Stars
At Folsom Prison was such a landmark recording that his next live album would need to be something entirely different or somehow try to match his 1968 classic.
He went for the latter and the 1969 At San Quentin was certainly an equal to the previous release.
Where to start, well his prescence, humour and compassion come through very clearly.
The track San Quentin was so appreciated it was sung twice and A Boy Named Sue is a fantastic story of a father and son relationship.
Wanted Man is another essential song mixing humour with mischief making, a great Bob Dylan write.
More than on At Folsom Prison, Johnny sings gospel songs, 4 in total, (There'll Be) Peace In The Valley, Daddy Sang Bass,The Old Account Was Settled Long Ago, and He Turned Water Into Wine.
Look out in the sleeve notes for a contribution from Merle Haggard which just about says it all.
Free Music Review: Just totally awesome. Hit: 5 Stars
I can safely say that any positive comment directed towards this album is 100% true. I have this on vinyl also, and this remaster is ten times as great. Just look at the tracklist here, it's practically a live hits album. Included is "I Walk The Line", "Darlin' Companion", "Boy Named Sue", "Peace In The Valley", "Ring Of Fire", and numerous other classics. However, what really makes "At San Quentin" amazing, is the between song chat between Johnny and the prisoners. It adds emotion and humor, and a real look at the kind of man Johnny was. This album alone solidified his status as rebel and legend. Another major plus besides the better sound and extra tracks is the price. This is the no-brainer of no-brainers. In summary, "At San Quentin" is the real Johnny Cash, it's real country, and even more than that it's just real good music.
Free Music Review: "Johnny Cash At San Quentin" is brilliant! Hit: 5 Stars
"Johnny Cash At San Quentin" is brilliant! This is the best of Johnny Cash's albums and now one of my favorites, which also includes "Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison".
