Free Music Review: Fine, But Same As Other Releases

This CD is fine, but it is the same complement of great Johnny Cash cuts Columbia has been re-releasing for the past decade or so, give or take a song or two. In fact, Columbia is now even recycling titles -- this is the second Cash collection it calls "Essential." This time around, the liner notes are skimpier and the number of oversights greater. ("Song of the Patriot" makes it but "Kate" and "Blistered" don't? The U2 collaboration shows up but not guest shots from Emmylou Harris's "Roses in the Snow" and Marty Stuart's "Busy Bee Cafe"?) Quibbling with what makes it on to anyone's career retrospective is a losing proposition. But, since this is about the 800th time Columbia has slapped "Ring of Fire" (don't get me wrong -- it's a great song) onto a Cash collection, someone should take Columbia to task for giving the impression that Cash's output is somewhat limited. More than 500 tracks were released by Columbia during his career, and, as Bear Family has demonstrated, there are also dozens of fine, unreleased tracks. Come on, Columbia, get serious about representing Johnny Cash's work on CD. And, let's resolve -- no more "Greatest Hits" disks for a while.
