Free Music Notes for The Legend of Johnny CashFree Music Review: A Legend, Indeed Hit: 5 Stars
When Johnny Cash sang a song, you listened. His deep, commanding voice & presence, his brilliant ability to tell stories, his heartfelt songwriting and skillful fingerpicking on the guitar....you didn't mess with The Man In Black. It's no wonder that he has influenced so many songwriters & musicians straight across the music board, and not just country music, but also rock and folk. Johnny Cash was a true original, and we'll never see another one like him. If you only buy one Johnny Cash CD, then "The Legend Of Johnny Cash" is the perfect choice---a single shot of 21 of Cash's greatest tracks spanning his entire career from 1955 to 2003, and all sequenced in chronological order, starting with Cash's earliest single "Cry Cry Cry," and ending with his gorgeous, instant-classic rendering of Nine Inch Nails' song about addiction, "Hurt." In between, you get other signature Cash favorites like "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk The Line," "Ring Of Fire," and Cash's duet with his beloved wife June Carter, "Jackson." There's also his huge hit novelty song, "A Boy Named Sue" (recorded live at San Quentin Prison), and later Cash material like his song with U2, "The Wanderer," his memorable tale, "Delia's Gone," and there's even a great, full-throttle rock song for Johnny with his terrific cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage." Needless to say, Johnny Cash's entire catalog is well worth buying, and the man certainly left us a whole wealth of wonderful music and then some. But this CD, "The Legend Of Johnny Cash," is an outstanding disc to start with.
Free Music Review: Great Collection Hit: 5 Stars
Cash had such a successful career it would be hard to create a definitive collection of all his best and most important songs, but I think this comes as close as possible, with a single CD. Sure it would have been great to see a couple more songs. I would have liked to have seen Orange Blossom Special and Ballad of Ira Hayes. Everyone probably has their favorites; some are here and some may not be. Most of the important songs are here (I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, Folsum Prison Blues and Boy Named Sue to name a few). Have always liked Johnny Cash, but not a big collector of his work, so several of the songs here were new to me. Never heard Rusty Cage before and it seems the weakest of all the songs; too much repeating at the end. The Wanderer (with U2) is not one of the better songs either.
Highwayman with Willie Nelson & Kris Kistofferson is a great song, but there isn't much Cash in it. The first time I listened, I wondered why Willie Nelson was singing in the middle of the Johnny Cash recording, but it was good thing to include the song, as well as the duet with his wife (Jackson). 'Hurt' is a dark and sad song to end the album with. Something more upbeat would have been a better ending. Overall, you would have a hard time finding a better variety album of Johnny Cash's work.
Free Music Review: An Excellent Single-Disc Overview of The Man In Black!!! Hit: 5 Stars
The recently released "Legend of Johnny Cash" compilation is the first single-disc collection to cover the legendary Man In Black's entire career. While it would take literally a half-dozen CDs or more to cover every important piece of music Cash has made, this compilation offers the basics and is an excellent overview of his most important and classic work. The legendary Sun records hits, "Cry Cry Cry", "Hey Porter", "I Walk The Line" and "Folsum Prison Blues" are included here as well as "A Boy Named Sue", "Ring Of Fire" and "Highwayman" (his collaboration with Country legends Kris Kristoferson, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson). Also included is Johnny's cameo appearance from U2's 1993 "Zooropa" album, "The Wanderer" and to close out the disc, there are several tracks from his American Records series with producer Rick Rubin including the final hit "Hurt" (originally by Nine Inch Nails).
With that said, "the Legend of Johnny Cash" is an essential collection and offers an excellent brief history lesson of his most acclaimed work. For the few who have never heard of Johnny Cash, this CD is an excllent introduction to his music. For everyone else, this is probably the best collection of Cash music to date.
Free Music Review: An Excellent Compilation Hit: 5 Stars
This compilation is a superb tribute to the Man in Black. Not only does it provide a sampling of his best known songs, like "Ring of Fire" and "I Walk the Line", but it shows us a possibly lesser-known side of Cash through songs like "Rusty Cage", "Hurt", and "Highwayman"; THE LEGEND OF CASH truly captures it all, from the near rockabilly sound of the mid-fifties to the grilling electric riffs of the nineties. It absolutely explores every side of Johnny Cash ever put to music.
In addition to the perfect musical content, the liner notes are very eye-opening. Pages of vintage photos combined with a four-page biography of the country music pioneer enhance this compilation. There's even a snapshot inside the famous Folsom Prison gig.
This disc is perfect beginning to end, and would serve as an ideal purchase for a first-time Johnny Cash listener. Then again, it would be a good buy for a longtime fan, too, offering a good overview of the Man in Black's repertoire. Whoever you are, THE LEGEND OF CASH is in every way worth a listen. Not many are worthy of the title "legend", but Johnny Cash was just that.
And the legend himself would have been proud of this compilation.
Free Music Review: Born a Man, Died a Legend dressed in Black!!!!!! Hit: 5 Stars
Johnny Cash will forever be a true legend in the country music/southern rock industry. He is a man who set the standard to pave the way for future country/southern rock singers such as Lynard Skynard, .38 Special, Hank Williams Jr., Dwight Yoakam, and a few others. For this last installment in his long and well deserved career he has had, Johnny along with Rick Rubin produces this somewhat greatest hits cd comprised of Johnny Cash's best and most remembered songs in his career. This is the last cd Johnny Cash came out with before his passing.
With a total of 21 songs and special appereances by his wife June Carter Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, & U2, this cd has Johnny Cash's best recorded songs he has came out with all the way up to his 2003 hit "Hurt" which was produced by Rick Rubin. My personal favs on this disc are Cry Cry Cry(#1), Folsom Prison Blues(#3), I Walk the Line(#4), A Boy Named Sue(#10, Live), & Hurt(#21). They all are phenomenal songs and they all sound fantastic.
If you're a true fan of country music or yall are interested in the history of country music than this cd is one I recommend. An awesome cd to pick up.
