Free Music Notes for The Legend of Johnny CashFree Music Review: Man in black Hit: 5 Stars
It's always difficult to make a greatest hits package on one single CD for an artist with a career of half a century (Ray Charles, Elvis Presley and others) so let's be honest and say that everything is not here. BUT it's a good collection of Johnny Cash's legacy. It mainly focuses on the early days at Sun and the last days with Rick Rubin and there's only a few tracks of his sixties and seventies recordings.
So I'd say that it's a good way to learn where the legend began and where it ended but it's frustrating to hear almost nothing from the rest except A BOY NAMED SUE, SAN QUENTIN or MAN IN BLACK among others.
ONE PIECE AT A TIME (from the seventies) or WHAT IS TRUTH (from the sixties) could have been better choices than THE WANDERER (a bad song from a 1993 U2 album) for example.
Anyway, it's a superb album that deserves its success. It can already be considered as THE Johnny Cash collection.
PS: When I say it's a pity ONE PIECE AT A TIME is not on the CD although it is, it's because I made the review after the European tracklist of the CD where we don't have ONE PIECE AT A TIME. Anyway, the tracklist is quite identical.
Free Music Review: The legend of Johnny Cash- JOHNNY CASH Hit: 5 Stars
This is a great collection of Johnny Cash's songs. It as almost equally divided in sections for parts of his life. When I bought this album, there were only three songs that I had not previously heard. The album opens with tunes of Cash's classic Tennessee-two-step format then progresses to his wonderful story-telling years. This CD is littered with tracks written by other artists: Jack Clemet, June Carter-merie Kilgore, Billy Edd Wheeler- Jerry Lieber, Shel Silverstein, Kris Kristofferson, Wayne Kemp, jimmy Webb, Bono, Chris Cornell, Geoff Mack, and finally- Trent Reznor. As many of you know Trent Reznor is the lead singer of Nine Inch Nails-a modern Hard Rock Band. The last song on the album-"Hurt"- was composed by Trent. The song is about drug addiction and general hardship. When performed by Johnny Cash, "Hurt" turns from a somewhat tangled emotional mess to a heartbreaking tale of a man questioning his own salvation. This album is a great collection of music and can be enjoyed by anyone from your grandmother to your grandson.
Free Music Review: A Pocketful of Cash Hit: 5 Stars
Johnny Cash left a huge legacy of recordings from a career that spanned six decades, so to condense that catalog into one CD is a nearly impossible feat. This collection comes about as close as one could hope, though - "Legend" starts with his very first single, "Cry Cry Cry"/"Hey Porter" and works through most of the familiar classics: "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", "Jackson", "A Boy Named Sue", and so on into the 70's. Then it jumps to his "comeback" era, starting with his collaborations with the Highwaynen (Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson) and U2. Finally, we get to the sublime "American Recordings", his inspired and moving series of stripped-down and personal performances produced by Rick Rubin, ending with "Hurt", one of the most mesmerizing and cathartic covers anyone has ever done of any song. This is the only single CD on the market, to my knowledge, that tries to summarize Cash's entire career, so that makes it a pretty good introduction to the Man in Black.
Free Music Review: The only Man in Black as far as I'm concerned! Hit: 5 Stars
Up until my purchase of this CD (for a measly 6 or 7 dollars first week at Circuit City) I had only heard about 2 Cash songs "Ring of Fire" and his NIN cover "Hurt". When I saw this on sale for such a good price I figured why not, it might introduce me to something good. I normally listen to a lot of rock and some other genres but mostly rock, I like country but I'm not like it's biggest fans. That changed once I heard this CD. Sorry to bugger on about my story, basically I'll just say this, you have two choices: if you want a "basics" compilation that has a majority of the tracks from "Walk The Line" on it, then pick up this disc. If you really want to delve into the Cash collection I also highly recommend "The Legend" box set. You get your money's worth with that one, only negative about that is it doesn't feature the American Recordings songs that he did, which is ok because I already had some of the good ones on this CD. That's my opinion take it or leave it folks.
Free Music Review: A new find Hit: 5 Stars
I have never been a big fan of country music. My main music of choice is of the heavy metal genre such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, and newer groups like nine inch nails, and the harder edged industrial stuff. I always thought Johnny Cash was kind of cool, but until today I never really listened closely to his music. I recently became curious about the CD, and was happy to get it as a Xmas gift. I went for a ride on this cold, cloudy day in late December, and it could not be a better day to introduce myself to the man in black's music. All I can say is this Cd, of what are his classic songs, is just brilliant, and timeless - a very enjoyable listen. The CD is a real gem, and I would suggest anyone who is even the least bit curious about Cash to go out and get this. To me, it's a work of art that deserves a spot on my shelf right alongside the other CDs from varoius genres that I consider essential classics.
