Free Music Notes for The Legend of Johnny CashFree Music Review: Now I Understand Hit: 5 Stars
Wow, good stuff. Like many other reviewers, I do not consider myself a country music fan, but I've heard enough about Johnny Cash to be curious. I recently took a business trip to the Nashville area and checked out the live music scene. I had a blast. Also, as I was listening to the radio (I think it was the Grand Ole Opry station?) in my rental car a song came on called "One Piece at a Time" by Johnny Cash. What a great song! I immediately wanted to hear it again. As soon as I got back home I went to look for a "greatest hits" CD and found The Legend of Johnny Cash which contained this song plus many others. In addition to songs I already knew (Burning Ring of Fire, Walk the Line, The Man in Black, etc), other great songs are Hey Porter, Big River, Delia's Gone, and Give My Love to Rose. I also thoroughly enjoyed Johnny Cash's cover of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage.
Free Music Review: "We got married in a fever..." Hit: 5 Stars
The Legend of Johnny Cash is a perfect and blended mix of Cash's early and later works. Standout tracks include: Hurt, Rusty Cage, The Man Comes Around, A Boy Named Sue (Live), Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk the Line, Jackson (duet with June Carter), Get Rhythm, and Ring of Fire. The sound quality is excellent, the catalog of songs are unique and shows the wide range of Cash's most timeless and popular recordings. You won't stop listening to his cover of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage, wow, now that's how a cover is supposed to be done! You will cry like a baby when you hear the song Hurt (Nine Inch Nails song). Of course his best and celebrated work are the songs he wrote. I love the song Jackson, Johnny and June sound so good together when they sing, it's complete and utter magic! I highly recommend this greatest hits collection for old and new Johnny Cash fans!
Free Music Review: An American Music classic ! Hit: 5 Stars
In an era when the term legend or icon is thrown at anyone who has had a hit record, Johnny Cash is to country music what Bob Dylan is to pop music. He is a true music icon, who has touched more than one generation of music fans everywhere. This single disc 21 cut career overview is the best single disc compilation available. It is the first best of collection to touch all three phases of his recording career, with cuts from his Sun years, Columbia years and his recently acclaimed American recordings. As mentioned before, an uncensored version of "A Boy Named Sue" appears as well as the studio version of "Folsom Prison Blues". The disc ends with the phenominal "Hurt", Johnny's last hit record that found it's way to the MTV generation. This affordable collection is the perfect starter set for anyone wishing to discover the legendary Johnny Cash.
Free Music Review: Excellent Single CD Overview of The Man in Black Hit: 5 Stars
Johnny Cash's music and popularity has transcended generations and genres. His fans consist of people like myself who don't care much for the current crop of country artists that Nashville is promoting, younger fans who were introduced to his music through excellent covers of Soundgarden and Nine Inch Nails tunes and longtime country fans. With a career that lasted as long as his it's hard to narrow his material down to one CD but this collection does a good job. You get his early stuff with the Tennessee Two ("Cry, Cry, Cry", "Folsum Prison Blues", "Get Rhythm") his middle era ("Man In Black","Sunday Morning Coming Down", "A Boy Named Sue")and his amazing comeback on the Rick Rubin "American Recordings" ("Rusty Cage", "Hurt"(dare I say this is better than the NIN version), "Delia's Gone"). All in all an excellent overview of a legendary career.
Free Music Review: Cash is worth your money. Hit: 5 Stars
This one's got it all practically. Great stuff. Cash's "Man in Black" anthem. Funny ditty-type songs like "One Piece at a Time," "Boy Named Sue," and "Jackson." My two favorites are "Highwayman" and "The Wanderer."
These two tracks are appropriately located right next one another on the disc. "The Wanderer" (done with U2) is a meditation on the one body/one soul search for rest/love/G-d. "Highwayman," done with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson, is about one soul in many bodies (an Old West robber, a sailor, a dam-builder, and an astronaut) i.e. reincarnation and the eternity of the soul. So soon after Cash's passing I wonder what his next incarnation might be.
Speaking of Kristofferson, he penned "Sunday Morning Coming Down" (and Cash sings it like no one else). That song alone is reason enough to buy this disc.
