Free Music Review: Great chops shown off with tasteful playing.

I've gotten several new CDs over the last couple of months and this is one of the best. It clearly rates in the 4-5 star range and aficionados of fine guitar playing can't go wrong with it.
As has been mentioned several times over now, there's more than one style of guitar music covered here -- actually, it's about evenly split between country picking and Van Halen-style rock. While some may be put off by that, I found the diversity enjoyable. All the way through the CD, no matter what he is playing, Hiland keeps a strong sense of feeling in the music and qualities like tone and melody never get lost in an effort to stretch things.
The people who say Johnny Hiland isn't the return of Danny Gatton are right, there will only ever be one Danny Gatton (JH would be the first to tell you that). I used to think guys like Malmsteen, Vai, Satriani, and Holdsworth were the pinnacle of guitar virtuosity, but then I heard Danny Gatton and that quickly changed. I think it's good to see great, young players, like Hiland, who have been influenced by Gatton coming into their own. So yes, being Johnny Hiland is plenty good enough. He's one of the most talented newcomers on the guitar scene, and this CD more than proves that.
Finally, as an aside, I think it's clear that I agree with the self-described "hairhead" in that having an open mind and listening to a lot of different styles of music is a very good thing. I only hope he'll take his own advice and listen to country music with a bit more of an open mind. (Those "silly lyrics" are about the ups and downs of life, and more often than not you'll find that they're very telling and clever.)
